CARLTON F. STOWE

AVOCA-Carlton F. Stowe, 85, died suddenly Saturday afternoon (April 16, 2011) at his home at 8806 County Route 105, Avoca.
Born in Geneva on December 5, 1925, he was a son of the late Fred M. and Eunice Kelsey Shaut Stowe. On July 15, 1950 he was married to the former Dorothea Mae Putnam, who survives.
A lifelong resident of Avoca, Carlton was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Marine Corps from November of 1943 to July of 1946. He was an Airborne Radio and Radar Operator with extensive service in the South Pacific, China and Japan.
He graduated from Avoca Central School and after his military service he furthered his education at Alfred Ag-Tech, the Rochester Business Institute and the University of Alabama.
For 45 years he was in the potato dealership business having established himself in several professional aspects of the industry. His peers considered him a pioneer and he was a perfector in the art of storing potatoes for the late markets. His affiliations in the local and national market place for potatoes and the by product, potato chips, projected him to help preserve the strong relationship that is persistent today by the potato industry for Steuben County potatoes.
Carlton was a member of the Avoca Masonic Lodge No. 673 F&AM, a life time member of the Avoca American Legion Post No. 1315, a life time member of the VFW Post No. 1470 and an 81 year member of the Avoca United Methodist Church. He was also a member and past president of the Avoca Rod & Gun Club and a member of the Historical Society of Avoca.
He loved fishing, golf, RV traveling, bus trips and playing cards.
Carlton was a loving husband and father who enjoyed life and was very proud of his family and their accomplishments.
His family includes his wife of 61 years, Dorothea; his two sons, Stephen (Gail) Stowe and Jason (Laurie) Stowe; his daughter, Andrea M. Stowe; his five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; his brother Merlyn “Pat” (Jane) Stowe; also many nieces, nephews; his cousin, Shirley Wetmore and several second cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Elton Stowe.
To honor his wishes there will be no calling hours. A Masonic memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Avoca United Methodist Church followed by a funeral service to be celebrated in his memory by the Rev. Fred Dyer. Services will conclude with military honors. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Avoca United Methodist Church, 8593 Jacobs Ladder Road, Avoca, N.Y. 14809.
Arrangements are with the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca.

  1. Grandpa words cannot express the sorrow that I feel now that you are no longer here. I want to thank you for being my grandpa for the last 39 years. You’ve passed on a legacy onto us and I have never been prouder to bear the last name of Stowe. Although we won’t be able to see you or talk with you, I can take comfort in knowing that I have another guardian angel looking over myself and my family. May you rest in peace, Grandpa, and thank you for a lifetime of memories. I love you very much and am extremely proud to call you my grandpa!

  6. Dori and family:
We are sorry for your loss, he will be missed by everyone. Carl was a great man. We really enjoyed talking to him each time he came into the shop. Just last week when he was in having work done on the van, he sat and had coffee and jelly toast with me and I got a lot of great advise on how to retire, along with a good dose of humor.
He was a wise man.I loved his smile. He was sincere. Some how we got to talking about church and he really loved to hear the chior. Well we belive he is now among the greatest chior we will ever hear.
You are all in our prayers.
May you feel the presence of our almighty God and His peace at this time and always.
    God Bless you all

  7. Dora and all of the wonderful family members of the Stowe family. I have known all of you for many years and feel like I am a part of your family. I respected Carl so very much and want you all to know that I am so sad to learn of his passing. I am such a lucky man to have known Carl. Carl was one of a kind. So easy to talk to and so knowledgeable about the potato business and about life. He has had a huge impact in my life showing me how to respect people around me and how to appreciate them. He always smiled when I spoke to him. You could “see” his smile when talking with him on the phone and every time talking to him face to face. He was a mentor to many of us. His presence will always be felt by us forever. I know how proud he was of his family and friends. I am so proud to have him as a friend. Like so many, I will miss him. Love you all.

  8. To the Stowe family: We were sorry to hear about Carl’s passing. Many years ago as a young man just starting in the potato industry and at the direction of my employer(Maine Farmers Exchange) I was introduced to CF. Carl was always very helpful and I have always felt fortunate to have had his guidance. I have many great memories of CF and all of the Stowe family. Rest in peace CF.

  9. Dear Dor and family…..We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Please know Carl and all of you will be in our thoughts and prayers. Let us know if there is anything we can do for you.

  10. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Stowe family. Carl was such an icon of Avoca and will be sadly missed by all that knew him and the family. My father was in the same potato business as Carl and I have known the Stowe family since I was a young kid. Dorthea and family please know that we are thinking of you and the family even if we are unable to attend the memorial service. Please know that unfortunately my family and I know too well how hard this day is and he will always be with you and on your minds. With Love, Bev & Bob Schumacher and family
