WINKY A. (MARKHAM) BALLOCH

HORNELL-Winky A. (Markham) Balloch, 68, of Allen St., passed away early Sunday morning (Aug. 25, 2013) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Born in Hornell on Oct. 16, 1944, she was the daughter of Charles Markham, who predeceased her and June Shattuck Markham, who survives.
A graduate of St. Ann’s School and Hornell High School, class of 1963, Winky also attended Alfred State College.
She resided in Rowayton, Conn. and Topsfield, Mass. before returning to Hornell 15 years ago.
For over 10 years, Winky has been employed with custodial services at Alfred State College.
The most important things to her were her family and friends; she considered them her purpose in life. Winky dearly loved her grandchildren and was known as a very emphatic grandmother.
She will be remembered for entertaining with great passion and she always felt the presentation was just as important as the taste of the food. When she was not entertaining, she was most likely passionately involved in a game of Texas Hold’em.
During her recent illness she has been tremendously supported by her family, friends and co-workers at Alfred State College.
Her loving family includes her mother, June Markham of Hornell; her two daughters, Brittanie (Gary) Balloch Mulkigian of Exeter, N.H. and Christi Balloch of New Market, N.H.; her two brothers, Jack (Linda) Markham and Patrick Markham all of Hornell; also her three nieces, Kim (Ritch) Edinger, Kelly (Dave) Hamsher and Kara Markham (Jake Coons).
There will be an hour of calling from 10-11a.m. Thursday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will be held in her memory at 11 a.m. Thursday, with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.
Those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.

  1. Winky and I grew up together from age 5 years through high school. She was a very important part of my youth and we had a great childhood. I didn’t see her much after my wedding because life took over and we both were very busy. Christmas cards were always sent every year and I thought of her often.
I was unaware of her illness and would have wanted to see and thank her for her friendship.
I am very sad that I can’t attend her service but please know that you will all be in my heart at that time.
God bless everyone in her family and friends. May God give you peace at this time.
    Love to all,
    Sally (Robinson)Wissmann

  2. I am going to miss Winky so much. She was a cleaner in our building for a number of years and was always interested in the animals, the students and everyone in the program. She loved to go into the animal areas and see what was new. She would even sit and just gab for a few minutes about her grandkids, my kids and everything in between. Will miss her here.

  3. I have known Winkie for the ten years I have worked at Alfred State College. I enjoyed her wit and her expertise with decorating and creative writing. For the last couple of years she had not worked in our buidling but we still had a few social interactions like visiting the casino together and attending friends parties. One recent interaction was at a local department store where she was buying items for her upcoming class reunion. I helped her pick out the perfect pair of shoes and was so shocked to hear that she was ill, and missed the reunion just a month later. I will miss her smiling face and hearing about those kids and grandkids that she so loved.

  4. Winky,

Every time we saw each other you were always so warm and kind. I know you were a great friend and Mom to your girls and awesome Grandmother to those beautiful children. May you rest in peace.

  5. I am sorry I cannot travel there today. Know you are in my hearts and mind all day and afterwards. I will be here for you and will see you very soon.

  6. We will remember Winky with much love, she was always a great friend to us when we lived in Norwalk. Mel and I loved to visit them for dinner and walk to the beach in the evening with a glass of wine. Brittanie and Christi were very young then. We used to have a lot of fun at their house, also enjoyed our lazy days on the beach. Plus the many places we used to go together. Unfortunately we moved to California and didn’t see them any more (Christi came to visit us) I wish we hadn’t lived so far apart, We would have loved to have spent more time with her. Bless you Winky, we had fun didn’t we? Love you Sue and Mel xxx

  7. Winky you have touched so many lives & will never be forgotten. You blessed all you have come in contact with. Your our angel now. Thank God for Winky
