WILLIAM J. WEAVER
HORNELL-William J. Weaver, 84, of S. Division St., passed away Sunday morning (June 6, 2010) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Born in Hornell on Dec. 26, 1925, he was a son of the late E. Earl and Susie Schaill Weaver. On July15, 1947 he was married at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell to the former Virginia C. “Ginny” House, who predeceased him on Jan. 27, 2010, after nearly 63 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his grandson, Jonathan Weaver, his stepmother, Veronica McNelis; his two sisters, Eleanor Strimple and Phyllis Meeks; and his two brothers, Charles and Harold Weaver.
A life long resident of Hornell, Bill was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1944. He proudly served with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1944 to his honorable discharge in 1946.
He was employed by the former Erie Railroad in Hornell as a car inspector and also for the Steuben County Court as a court attendant.
Bill was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell. He was also a member and past commander of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell, a member of the Hornell Moose Lodge No. 210 and also served as a city alderman for two terms.
One of his favorite past times was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His family includes his three children, Joseph Weaver of Rochester, Patricia (Timothy) Ewell of East Irondequoit and Diane (James) Reagan of Himrod; his seven grandchildren, Steven (Tina) Weaver, Jeffrey (Laura) Weaver, Laurie (Chad) Cassano, Jessica (Brian) Oby, Nicole, Katelyn and Samantha Reagan; his eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Ruth (Carroll) Carman of Franklin, NC; his half brother, Phillip Weaver also his nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are from noon-2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will take place following calling hours at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to Faith In Action, 20 Broadway, Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
