SYLVIA P. (MEHLENBACHER) TRAVIS
AVOCA-Sylvia Pearl (Mehlenbacher) Travis, 81, of Avoca, and a resident of the Taylor Health Center in Bath, passed away late Tuesday evening (Feb. 9, 2016) at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira.
Born in Cohocton on Sept. 3, 1934, she was the second child and eldest daughter of seven children born to the late Lawrence and Pearl (Sloat) Mehlenbacher. In October of 1954 she was married to John L. Travis and relocated to Connecticut in 1959 where they raised their six children.
After her husband of 43 years passed away in 1997, Sylvia returned to her hometown of Avoca where she was involved in many activities including the FLM Telethon and participated in cancer walks. She also directed and sang with the elderly choir and did a skit about Blanche Scott for a few years at the Curtis Museum in Hammondsport. Sylvia also acted and made costumes for the Keuka players and read the poem Flanders Field at the Avoca Memorial Day parade. A noted seamstress, she was awarded many blue ribbons at various fairs.
She was loved and respected by all that knew her and will be greatly missed.
Her loving family includes her five children, Jesse L. Travis of Bath, Joan Broulaird of Groton, Conn., Jay L. (JoAnn) Travis of Lisbon, Conn. James L. (Marcy) Travis of Prattsburgh and Joseph L. Travis of Oklahoma City, Okl. Sylvia also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, with two on the way; her two brothers, Rowland (Sue) Mehlenbacher and Jerry (Billy) Mehlenbacher; her two sisters, Patricia (Albert) Neff and Joann (James) Panzeck; also her nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, John L. Travis of Deerfield, N.H. and her two brothers, Norman and James Mehlenbacher.
The Avoca Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Sylvia P. (Mehlenbacher) Travis.
Calling hours are 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Avoca Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca, where a funeral service will be held following calling hours at 3 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Bill McFeaters of the Avoca Baptist Church officiating.
