HORNELL-Ronald L. Quinlan, 86, of Ravine street, passed away early Saturday morning (March 2, 2019) at St. James Hospital in Hornell.
Born in Youngstown, Ohio on Oct. 8, 1932, he was the son of the late Paul and Mary (Hough) Quinlan. On Sept. 11, 1954 he was married at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell to the former Carolyn A. Pollinger, who predeceased him on Sept. 7, 1993 after 39 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his step-father, Paul Quartz; a grandson, Kylan Quinlan; step-brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Catherine Quartz; step-sister, Jean Pollinger and step-brother-in-law, Jack Tobin.
Ron spent his younger years in Youngstown, Ohio where he graduated from St. Ursuline High School; he also graduated from Niagara University and received a master’s degree in education from Geneseo State College. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged as a Second Lieutenant.
Throughout the years he has resided in Geneseo, Perkinsville and has lived in Hornell for most of his life.
He began his teaching career as a 4th grade teacher at Dansville Central School and eventually became employed with the Hornell City School District as a 6th grade teacher at the former Washington School and retired as a 12th grade English teacher at the Hornell Senior High School, where he served as a Senior Advisor for many years and was involved in the production of senior plays such as, Hip Hippy Hooray, which was a huge success. He also volunteered at the ticket booth for athletic events and assisted in the school census every summer for the district.
Ron was a communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell and was presently a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell. He loved animals and was an avid reader and also enjoyed music, the theater and traveling, especially European countries. Ron dearly loved his family and cherished the times he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His loving family includes one daughter, Karen (Joseph) Kuhn of Hornell; five sons, Timothy (KC) Quinlan of Arkport, Joseph (Karen) Quinlan of Doylestown, Pa., Paul (Debra) Quinlan of Hornell, William (Seana) Quinlan of Canisteo and Philip (Tima) Quinlan of Potomac Falls, Va.; 21 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren with one “one the way;” one step-sister, Mary Lou Tobin of Hornell; one step-brother-in-law, Richard Pollinger of Hornell; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Margaret and Jerry Secondo of Hornell; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Thursday (March 7, 2019) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Relatives and friends are invited to meet his family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday (March 8, 2019). Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
The United States flag and the Marine flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in recognition of his military service.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either the Hornell High School Alumni Assoc., P.O. Box 135, Hornell or to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
