Roland C. “Buzz” Brown

  BATH/HORNELL – Roland C. “Buzz” Brown, 92, of County Route 70A, Bath, formerly of Hornell, entered eternal rest peacefully Wednesday morning (June 7, 2023) at the Bath V.A. Medical Center.

Born in Hornell on April 7, 1931, he was one of 13 children born to the late Laverne and Bernice (Bicknell) Brown. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Lucy Olds, Marilyn “Min” Alsheimer and Margaret “Pug” Nasca, and five brothers, Donald, Robert, Laverne “Short,” Jack and William Brown.

A graduate of Hornell High School, Buzz proudly served his country for 22 years with the U.S. Air Force in England, Spain and Vietnam from 1950 to his honorable discharge in 1972 attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant.

He was employed by the Steuben County Sheriff Department at the Steuben County Jail in Bath, retiring as a Sergeant.

A faithful and active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Bath, Roland was a member of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 and the Cpl. J.J. Mooney VFW Post No. 2250 in Hornell, the Hornell Amvets Post No. 245, the Hornell Moose Lodge No. 210 and the Hornell Elks Lodge No. 364 and the Bath Elks Lodge No. 1547.

Buzz loved sports, especially basketball, golf, baseball and was an avid fan of the NY Yankees and the Kentucky Wildcats; when he was younger, he also enjoyed running. He also enjoyed current events and would read an entire newspaper daily.  Besides spending time with his family, he loved visiting with friends at the Arkport Village Café and the Texas Hot Restaurant in Wellsville, NY and “signing the books” at the clubs where he was a member.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Sandra (Boggis) Brown, who he married 33 years ago in Bath; one stepson, Darrell (Beth) Buckley of Bath; two grandsons, Ethan and Gavin Buckley; two sisters, Carolyn Tibbott of Hornell and Barbara Brown of Dingmans Ferry, PA; two brothers, Thomas (Barbara) Brown and James (Sandra) Brown all of Hornell;  two sisters-in-law, Sally Brown and Elanor Brown both Hornell; a brother-in-law, William Nasca of Hornell; as well as his many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours are 4-6 p.m. Thursday (June 15, 2023) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell. Relatives and friends are invited to join his family at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 122 Liberty St., Bath where a funeral service will take place in his memory at 11 a.m. Friday (June 16, 2023). Committal service and interment, with military honors, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bath National Cemetery.

The United States flag and the Air Force flag will proudly fly at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home in recognition of Roland’s military service.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 122 Liberty St., Bath, NY 14810 or the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home and church.
