HAMMONDSPORT – Robert H. Bailey took his last flight Thursday, January 26, 2023. He was born in October 1926 in Mineola, Long Island to Ray and Cornelia Bailey. Bob graduated from Roslyn High School and then attended Oswego State College until he joined the U.S. Army in 1945. He met and married the love of his life, Marie Wilkinson in 1950. Together they had four children, Marge Peaslee (Rick), Bob (Kathi), Ron and Amy (Lew).

Bob had a passion for aviation, learning to fly as a member of the Hammondsport Flying Club. He went on to become the first professional pilot for Great Western Winery until he left there after he earned his instructor rating in 1967. Bob’s pilot career also included managing the Hornell Airport, instructing, and flying charter flights. He retired in 1985 as Corporation Chief Pilot for Egret Aviation.

Besides aviation, Bob’s hobbies included “tinkering”, gardening, and fishing. One of his great accomplishments was building his family’s home where he resided since 1955. He also was an avid hockey player and was on the ice until he was 77 years old.

Bob was predeceased by his son Bob, and grandson Michael Peaslee. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marie; brother David (Lona), two daughters Marge and Amy and son Ron, 8 grandchildren along with numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial will be planned for the Summer.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, 8419 State Route 54, Hammondsport, NY 14840 or Fred & Harriett Taylor Memorial Library, P.O. Box 395, Hammondsport, NY 14840.

  1. Although it has been a number of years since we have been in contact with Bob and Marie, we were always very fond of them both and pleased whenever our paths would cross. We always enjoyed bantering with Bob, especially. Bostwick Club was always more fun when the Baileys were on the committee.! We send our sincere condolences to Marie and the rest of the family from us as we are now in NC. May God bless your fond memories of Bob as the years pass.
