CARRBORO, NC/HORNELL-Robert Ernst Bartell was born on March 26, 1950 and died unexpectedly at his home in Carrboro, NC, Saturday morning, October 20, 2012, (“Sweetest Day.”)
Born in Hornell to parents Ellen K. and Rollin E. “Bart” Bartell, Bob grew up on Genesee Street and was baptized at St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish and served as an altar boy there for many years. He attended the SUNY at Alfred and graduated from RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology.) After college graduation he began his career at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell as Chief Financial Officer. His work opportunities as a financial officer of hospitals and clinics landed him in several states, having lived in upstate New York, Illinois, Oklahoma, temporarily in Albuquerque, NM and finally at the Research Triangle Area of North Carolina.
Bob had a terrific sense of humor with an infectious belly laugh and boyish smile. He was compassionate and of generous spirit. He always took time to thank a veteran for he understood the sacrifice and how fortunate he was that his number was not drawn for Vietnam. He enjoyed a great meal with a glass of Coca Cola and could find him cooking a pork tenderloin at 10 p.m. while watching Emeril on the Food Network. He appreciated all genre of music, enjoyed reading biographies, debating current events and watching movies. He loved animals, but dogs were his favorite and he was always happiest when he was in the company of one.
Bob was well liked and loved by many. He is greatly missed. His memory (and laugh) lives on in his two daughters, Suzanne M. Davis and her husband Isaac W. Davis of Bloomfield, NM and their son, Elijah W. Davis; Mary E. Bartell Parker and her husband Aaron Parker of Winston-Salem, N.C. and their children, Kaitlin M. Bartell, Stephanie A. Parker and Benjamin R. Parker. Bob is also survived by his brother John Bartell and his wife Nancy K. Bartell of Hornell and their children, Kevin J. (Mary Liz) Bartell, Mary B. (Edward) Shutes and Patrice Bartell; his sister, Nancy B. Martello and her husband, Charles “Chuck” Martello of Webster and their children, Paul C. (Phyllis) Martello, John Martello, Tom (Maureen) Martello and Catherine Martello.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in his memory at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell at a later date and at the convenience of his family. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

A good man and a great uncle! I wish I could have known him better.
My family lived for a short time across Genesee St from the Bartells. Bob walked the smaller boys, inc. myself,to St Ann’s School daily – watching we didn’t tally behind for too long. I recall Bob as a kind, friendly & mentoring type of person. My prayers to his family for your loss. Tim Spellman Williamsville, NY
