Richard B. Heard

AVOCA – Richard B. Heard, 84, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 14, 2024) at his home on Oliver Street.

Born on July 31, 1939 he was a son of the late Gordon William and Mary Agnes (Pierce) Heard. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Preston.

A graduate of Avoca Central School, Richard proudly served his country with the U.S. Army from 1963 to his honorable discharge in 1965.

He was employed by Shay’s in Dansville, NY and retired from Mercury Aircraft in Hammondsport, NY.

Richard was a member and past commander of the Avoca American Legion, a member of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Rod and Gun Club in Bath, NY.

An avid sportsman, he especially enjoyed spending time hunting.

He is lovingly survived by three sisters, A. Joan  Burdin of Bath, NY, Judith (Dean) Hebbel of Houston, TX and Jacqueline Hart of Minnesota; one brother, William G. (Sharron) Heard of Bath, NY; many nieces and nephews; as well as Thomas, the cat.

There will be an hour of calling from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. PLEASE NOTE CORRECT DATE  THURSDAY (FEB. 22, 2024) at the Avoca Methodist Church, , 8593 Jacobs Ladder Road, where a funeral service, followed by military honors, will take place at 11 a.m. THURSDAY with Pastor Barre Butts officiating. A luncheon will be held at the church after the service. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either, the Avoca American Legion, the American Cancer Society or the Finger Lakes SPCA.

The family wishes to thank all of Richard’s caregivers, especially Yvonne Partridge. Also, thanks to all his friends and neighbors, especially Bruce Fox.
