RAYMOND B. HIGGINS
HORNELL- Raymond B. Higgins, 94, passed away on Friday (Nov. 24, 2017) at his home on West St.
He was born on Jan. 14, 1923 and was a graduate of Canaseraga Central School and served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
He drove tankers for GLF, was terminal manager for Agway, became a skilled auctioneer and, most recently, drove buses for Hornell Area Transit (HAT.)
He married Dorothea Selinsky in 1948 and is survived by his five children; Lorraine (Michael) Patterson of Edgewood, N.M., Stephen (Kayutah) Higgins of Albuquerque, N.M., Nanette (Rand) Hubbell of Scottsdale, Ariz., Kathleen (Lou) Apodaca of Albuquerque, N.M. and Virginia (Jeff) Kerr of Phoenix, Ariz.; his six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and step-daughters Kitty Giglio and Penny Becker, both of Hornell. Known as a loving uncle, he is also survived by his niece, Janice Thomas of Wooster, Ohio; two nephews, Gary (Donna) Gilbert of Canaseraga and Bruce (Betsy) Gilbert of Dumfries, Va.; as well as several great nieces and nephews.
Raymond served as Post Commander of VFW Post #5540 in Phoenix, N.Y. and was a member of its Honor Guard. He loved the NY Yankees, Lost Valley Farm, the Country Kitchen Restaurant in Hornell and will be remembered, among other things, for his one-liners (“If you don’t think I’m leaving, count the days I’m gone!â€).

There will be an hour of calling from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. Thursday (May 3, 2018) at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in his memory at 10 a.m. Thursday. Interment will be at Bath National Cemetery, with full military honors at 1 p.m. Thursday.
Ray was the grandfather I never had when I was living with Penny. He was so kind and he always treated me like family. I will never forget him.
