RALPH “BUD” HOWE
ARKPORT-Ralph “Bud” Howe, 75, of 8187 Lisman Lane, passed away, in the presence of his loving family, Saturday afternoon (June 26, 2010) at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., after a short illness.
Born in North Hornell on March 2, 1935, he was a son of the late Eugene and Irene Davidson Howe. On Nov. 3, 1956, he was married at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell to the former Lillian Cheresnowsky, who survives.
A life long resident of Arkport, Bud was a graduate of Arkport Central School and attended Modesto Junior College in Modesto, Ca. From 1957-1959 he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army stationed at Ft. Sills, Oklahoma and at the White Sands Missile Flats in New Mexico.
He was employed by the former SKF Industries in Hornell before he began a 35 year career with the Teamsters as a truck driver for heavy highway construction. Later, he retired from Crowley Dairy in Arkport.
Bud was a member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell and was a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church and St. Ann’s Church in Hornell and most recently at St. Mary’s Church in Canaseraga. He was a long time member of the Arkport Rod and Gun Club and the Arkport Memorial American Legion Post No. 1248 and was a member of the Hornell Elks Lodge No. 364 for 51 years. He was also a member of the National Rifle Assoc. (NRA) and a former member of the Arkport Volunteer Fire Dept.
An avid hunter, Bud was also considered as a “home handy man” and enjoyed wood working and spending time on his John Deere tractor caring for his property and mowing his lawn as well as tending to his vegetable garden. He loved history and had a wonderful memory and because of his knowledge of Arkport he was considered as the local historian. He was well known for his extensive collection of photographs and newspaper articles that he maintained about Arkport.
Bud will be remembered most of all for his smile, his sense of humor and for always having either a story or joke to share.
His family includes his wife of nearly 54 years, Lillian; his three children, Valerie (Larry) McCloskey of Saugerties, Joseph (Darla) Howe of Juneau, Alaska and Barbara (Jack) Cook of Arkport; his two grandchildren, Kyle and Abby Cook both of Arkport; also one sister and three brothers and his large extended family of nieces, nephews, aunt, uncles and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one sister.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St. Hornell, where the Hornell Elks Lodge will conduct a memorial service at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Friends are invited to meet his family at St. Ann’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to their favorite charity.
