PHILLIP G. SHAFER

   WELLFORD, SC/HORNELL, NY – Phillip G. Shafer, 95, of Wellford, SC, formerly of The Woodlands in Hornell, NY passed away Monday morning (Nov. 6, 2023) at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, SC with his wife and daughter by his side.

Born in Ithaca, NY on July 27, 1928 he was a son of the late James and Myra (McCool) Shafer. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by two brothers, Robert Shafer and Jack Shafer.

A graduate of Canisteo Central School, class of 1946, Phil proudly served his country with the U.S. Army from 1950 to his honorable discharge in 1952.

On May 12, 1956 he was married at the former Park United Methodist Church in Hornell to the former Barbara J. Palmer, who survives and resides in Wellford, SC.

He was a former resident of South Hornell, NY and began his employment with the former Erie Railroad Accounting Bureau in Hornell in 1953 and continued to be employed with the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad and Conrail in Scranton, PA, Cleveland, OH and Youngstown, OH, retiring in 1990. Phil and Barbara returned to Howard, NY in 1990, where they were members of the Howard Union Church. They moved to Hornell in 2004 where they resided until becoming residents of Wellford, SC. For many years they enjoyed the winter months in Punta Gorda, FL.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 67 years, Barbara; three children, Susan (John) Schaub of Boston, MA, Steven Shafer of San Diego, CA and Sarah (Doug) Trevis of Poland Ohio; eight grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

To honor his wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral service.

Those wishing may contribute in his memory to the American Heart Association.
