PAUL H. DANIELS JR.

AVOCA – Paul H. “Candyman” Daniels Jr., 85, of Nipher Road, passed away peacefully Wednesday (Jan. 18, 2023), at home after an extended illness, surrounded by family.

Born in Montour Falls, Oct. 4, 1937, he was the son of the late Paul H. Daniels Sr. and Cora (Herbert) Daniels.  In 1956 he married the love of his life, Lois Shaeffer, in Lowville, NY.  Besides his parents he was predeceased by 3 half siblings, 2 sons-in-law, James Wheaton and Zane Fairbrother.

Paul graduated from Avoca High School in 1957.  He worked for the Town of Avoca as Highway Superintendent and was self-employed at Shaeffer Septic Tank Service. He was a hunting and fishing guide in Alaska for several years.

Paul was a member and past President of the Avoca Alumni Association. A member of the Avoca Rod & Gun Club, Avoca Lions Club, an Official Measurer of the NYS Big Buck Club, Northeast Big Buck Club, Maine Antler & Skull Trophy Club, and the NRA.

Paul’s hobbies included being an avid hunter and fisherman, including all things that involved the outdoors.  He loved giving away candy, acquiring his nickname.  He enjoyed teaching NY Hunter Safety courses and Quality Deer Management. He spent many years displaying trophy bucks at the Steuben County Fair at the conservation building. He also contributed to many charitable organizations.

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Lois; children Steven Daniels, of FL, Susan Daniels, Sharon Wheaton, and Staci (Andrew) Costine, of NJ; 5 grandchildren; 1 step-grandson; 4 great-grandchildren; sister Alice Rice; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are 10-11 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 28th) at the Avoca United Methodist Church, 8593 Jacobs Ladder Rd., Avoca.  A Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Barre Butts officiating.  A luncheon will follow the service at the church.  Committal prayers and interment will follow the luncheon at Valley View Cemetery, Avoca.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to Avoca Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 447, Avoca, NY 14809, Bath Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 110 E. Steuben St., Bath, NY 14810, or CareFirst Hospice, 3805 Meads Creek Rd., Painted Post, NY 14870.  Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the church.

The Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home, 22 N. Main St., Avoca, is honored to assist Paul’s family with the arrangements.
