Nicholas David “Nick” Paine
HORNELL – Nicholas David “Nick” Paine, 65, of Bank Street gained his angel wings on Wednesday afternoon (June 21, 2023) at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY after a long illness.
Born in Hackensack, NJ on Aug. 15, 1957, he was the only child of the late David Paine; who predeceased him in March of 1986 and Anne (Kriminocker) Paine; who predeceased him in July of 1986. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his son, Nicholas “Nicky” Paine, Jr. in 2022.
A resident of Hornell for about 22 years, Nick was employed by the former Perry-Thompson Ford in Bath before he began his employment with Morrison-Knudsen (M-K) and Alstom in Hornell where he was employed as a Quality Control Manager.
He was a kind, compassionate and gentle man who was well known and loved by many; especially his worldly best friend and “brother”, Jeff Sawczyszyn. If Nick loved you, he truly loved you. He had a soft spot for animals and his passion was music. His piercing baby blue eyes reflected the gentle man he truly was.
Music was a very important part of his life. Nick will be remembered as a Rock and Roll legend. Many would say he was the “best” left-handed drummer around. He entertained hundreds of people with his amazing and unique drumming abilities. He told stories of packing the dance floor at the Fireside Chat. His love of music and passion for drumming allowed him to perform in several bands including, The Low cats, Montana Moon, The Rogues, Nixx, The Culprits, Buster Crab, Chimps with Hammers and his final band the Meat Cutter Union, with fellow band members, Jeff Sawczyszyn, Rich Black, Bruce Ingersoll. His music will forever live on in the hearts of everyone that had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.
“God speed” Nick – keep rocking on. We know that when we hear thunder now, it is you beating your drums once again.
He is lovingly survived by his sweetheart of the past 12 years, Patricia “Patty” Woodworth; two children, his beautiful daughter, Shawn (Gregg) Stowe of Bath and Garret Paine of Alfred and presently serving with the U.S. Marine Corps; two beloved grandchildren, whom he adored, he was their “Pop-Pop”, Quianah and Amirah Stowe; three “bonus” sons, Joseph, Nicholas and Larry Woodworth all of Hornell; three God children, Stephanie Ellis, Bailey Ellis and Casey Ellis who were entrusted to his care by his closest friends, Mike and Tracy Ellis; also his special little brown dog, Savanah.
To honor his wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A celebration of Nick’s life will be held at a later date.
Because of his love for animals, the family has requested that those wishing contribute in his memory to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7946 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, NY 14843.

Nick was the coolest guy I ever met. He always greeted me with kind words and his smile. I loved his hard driving drumming style and visiting with him at length every time our paths crossed. I’m so sorry for his passing and will miss him very much. Drum on Brother!
Nick was a good friend grew up together we will miss him greatly , We both were from New Jersey group on a country road in upstate New York great neighbor and friend will miss him !
