MILDRED I. “TILLIE” EVANS
HORNELL-Mildred I. “Tillie” Evans, 96, of Hornell, passed away Thursday morning (Sept. 15, 2011) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Born in Hornell on Oct. 2, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Phoebe Burleson VanScoter. She was married to Henry D. Evans, who predeceased her in 1961. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her infant twin daughters; her son, Philip R. Evans; her brother, Olmstead VanScoter and her two sisters, Lou Hagadorn and Martha Sylvain
A former resident of Wellsville, Mildred has resided in Hornell for most of her life.
For more than 20 years she was employed as a sales clerk in the children’s department of the former Tuttle & Rockwell Store in Hornell.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hornell and a member of the former Bethesda Community Hospital Auxiliary and a former member of the Women of the Moose, Hornell Lodge No. 210.
Mildred dearly loved her children and grandchildren and cherished the time she spent with them. She also enjoyed knitting, reading, watching TV, dancing and playing bingo and cards.
Her family includes her son, Henry D. (Nicole) Evans of San Antonio, TX; her daughter, Barbara (Frederick) Calnan of Dansville; her four grandchildren, Richard (Jamie) Calnan of Geneseo, Mark (Jeanne) Evans of Hinesville, GA, Philip (Debbie) Evans of Carlisle, PA and Cindy Earnest of Charleston, SC; her seven great-grandchildren, Connor, Reilly, Scott, Eric, Megan, Kristen and Bryan; her great-great-grandchild, Hailey; also her nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 4-6 p.m. today (Sunday) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with the Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Interment will be in Rural Cemetery, Hornell.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Activities Fund of McAuley Manor, 1 Bethesda Drive, Hornell, N.Y. 14843 Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
