Michael Andrew Sable

Michael Andrew Sable passed away peacefully at home on May 23, 2022, surrounded by loved ones, after a long, courageous battle with ALS.

He is survived by his parents, Arthur and Julie Sable, who were very proud of him in life and in passing. Mike is also survived by his wife Maria Sable, children Stephen Sable (Courtney Disbrow) and Sylvia Sable (Eric Engdahl); stepchildren David (Sara) Demarest and Dana (Brian) Haggerty; sisters Julie (Raymond) Ullrich, Elizabeth Sable, Lisa (Andrew) Cole; brothers Andrew (Tiffany) Sable, Arthur (Melissa) Sable; and many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Mike had an indescribable way of loving and giving attention to those dear to him. He was an avid outdoorsman, Scoutmaster, gardener, guitar player, and lover and maker of food and wine. He “lived a long and storied life,” as he liked to say, and he held audiences rapt as a master storyteller, leaving an impression on all those he met. Mike was a great appreciator and deep thinker on matters simple and profound alike, from growing tomatoes to the mysteries of the cosmos. His mind worked in ways both precisely technical and deeply spiritual, finding faith, meaning, and gratitude in his final years.

A service will be held at St. Gabriel’s Church in Hammondsport, New York¬ on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 5:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that those who loved Mike make a gift in his name to The Angel Fund for ALS Research or Compassionate Care ALS.

  1. I have known Mike for over 30 years. He was always a friendly face at the marina. Bought 2 boats from him over the years. Our condolences go out to all of the Sable family from the Penwarden family. He will be missed. Rest in peace my friend.

  2. As children, Mike and I were the closest of friends. We were the best of friends who were always together. We had our whole lives ahead of us to explore and enjoy. While our paths sadly separated, those early formative years helped me to understand the importance, and true meaning of friendship. And how it enhances one’s life. That gift will be with me forever.
I feel fortunate we had the opportunity to speak several times before you departed. Hearing your voice transported me back to the happiest of times. Forgive me Mike, I’m sorry we lost touch for so many years. I love you man…
Our sincerest sympathies go out to Maria and the entire Sable family. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
