HORNELL – Mary R. Dahill, 106, formerly of Maple Street, passed away on Sunday (July 27, 2025) at the Bickford Senior Living in Rocky River, Ohio.

Born in Olean, New York on Feb. 5, 1919 she was a daughter of the late Charles N. and Abigail E. (Straley) Recktenwald.

After graduating from Hornell High School in 1937, Mary was employed for nearly 20 years at the former Erie-Lackawanna Railroad Accounting Bureau in Hornell, and later volunteered for several years for the Women’s Board at the former St. James Mercy Hospital.

A devout Catholic, she was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell before relocating to Rocky River, Ohio in 2005.

Once Mary resided in the Cleveland, Ohio area she enjoyed activities at the local Senior Citizen Center and became an avid fan of both the Cavaliers and Guardians. While residing at the Bickford she made many friends, including fellow residents and staff.

Mary was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Francis W. Dahill who she married in 1957 and who passed away in 1988. She was also predeceased by her niece, Irene (Dick) Oyer; her sister, Catherine (Paul) Almeter; and five brothers, Charles (Ruth), James (Kay), Richard (Jeanette), William (Connie) and John (Beverly).

She is survived by her son, Charles (Anne) Dahill of Rocky River, Ohio; her granddaughter, Audrey Dahill of Santa Fe, New Mexico; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are 6-8 P.M. THURSDAY (JULY 31, 2025) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell. Relatives and friends are invited to join her family at St. Ann’s Church, 35 Erie Ave., Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M. FRIDAY (AUG. 1, 2025). Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

The Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home is honored to assist Mary’s family with the arrangements.
