MARY M. COLOMAIO

HORNELL-Mary Margaret Quigley Colomaio, 80, died early Sunday morning (April 6, 2014) at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.
Born in Salamanca, N.Y. on December 8, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Pauline Elsen Quigley. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her six brothers, Robert, William, Lawrence, Patrick, John “Jack” and Michael Quigley; her sister, Anne Stowell; her grandson, Robert M. Colomaio and her son-in-law, Jeffery Briggs.
A graduate of Salamanca High School, class of 1951, Mary received her nursing diploma from St. James Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Hornell in 1954. She retired in 1995 after 40 years of service at St. James Mercy Hospital Maternity Department. She helped bring countless babies into the world. Mary will be sadly missed and fondly remembered as an “old school registered nurse.”
Mary enjoyed reading and her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren. She enjoyed attending their numerous activities along with the many holiday and birthday celebrations. Family was the most important thing to Mary.
A member of Our Lady of the Valley Parish, she was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church and she enjoyed living on Pardee Street in Hornell for over 50 years. Mary was well known to all of the children in the neighborhood and always had a bowl of chocolate ready, “if you can say it you can have it”. One of her greatest thrills was riding in her nephew and godchild, Sean Quigley’s hot air balloon over Letchworth State Park. The Hornell St. Patrick’s Day Parade was one of the events that she most looked forward to each year. Mary also loved Elvis Presley and always enjoyed Maxine’s “words of wisdom.”
Her loving family includes her husband of 55 years, Matthew F. Colomaio, who she married at St. Patrick’s Church in Salamanca on July 12, 1958; her seven children and their families, Joseph (Susan) Colomaio of Kinston, N.C., John (Darlene) Colomaio of Buffalo N.Y., Rosemarie (Patricia Corning) Colomaio of Wales, N.Y., Deacon Robert (Pamela) Colomaio of Bath, N.Y. Michael Colomaio of Hornell, N.Y., William (Pamela) of Hornell, N.Y. and Lisa (John Grillo) Briggs of Fremont, N.Y.; her 11 grandchildren, Blaire Cooke, Carley (Nick McMichael) Briggs,
Gena Briggs, Mary Catherine Colomaio, Theresa Anne Colomaio, Vincent Colomaio, Anna Colomaio, Johnny Colomaio, Alex Dracup, Michelle McWhirter and Lucia Grillo; her sister, Frances Crouch of Allegany, N.Y.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

  4. I worked with Mary Margaret as an LPN and then new grad from St. James Mercy. She was kind in her sharing of knowledge to this inexperienced nurse. My prayers for her and her family.

  5. To the Colomaio family: I was so saddened to just hear of Mary’s passing! What a great person and a wonderful nurse! I enjoyed working with her at the good old St James maternity ward. The world was a better place with her in it. Although I didn’t get a chance to see her very often, when I would run into her we always had a nice visit. She will be missed!!!! Take care and God bless all of you! All the great memories you have will keep her with you always!!

  7. John, Joe, “Mr Colomaio” and all the rest,
Your Mom was a really nice person, always putting up cheerfully with your idiot friends of which I was one of the biggest. Not only were we always welcome but I recall a sharp sense of humor.
May it comfort you to know she is fondly remembered by so many for so many different things, her family, her community work and her many years at St James especially. She was one of the strong and steady that made/make Hornell a special community.
