In Loving Memory of Larry Dean “Swack” Swackhamer, July 28, 1949- June 3, 2025.

Larry Dean “Swack” Swackhamer passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, at the age of 75, with his devoted sister, Peggy Lynn, by his side at Jones Memorial Hospital. Born on July 28, 1949, Larry was the cherished son of Raymond Guy Swackhamer and Belvera Irene Saunders.

Larry graduated from Hornell High School in 1967 and later served in the National Guard for six years, beginning in 1969, demonstrating his dedication to service and commitment to his country.

He is survived by his three children and their spouses: Randy (Kathryn) Swackhamer, Karleigh (James) Winters, and Trey (Melissa) Swackhamer. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and he was eagerly awaiting another grandson, Luca Dean Swackhamer, due in September 2025.

He is also survived by his siblings: Gary (Phyllis) Swackhamer, Peggy Lynn Plank, Robert Rosell, and Cindi Harrison. Larry shared his home with his two cherished feline companions, Pee-Wee and Cruiser, who provided him with daily companionship and a quiet sense of comfort. Peggy Lynn, a devoted and unwavering sister, remained by Larry’s side throughout his health struggles in recent years, offering steadfast support and care.

In addition to his parents, Larry was predeceased by his grandparents, Claude and Hazel “Peg” Swackhamer who helped raise him and his brother-in-law, Howard Plank.

A passionate sports enthusiast, Larry’s steadfast devotion to the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees was a defining part of his life. Whether celebrating victories or lamenting defeats, he never missed the opportunity to engage in spirited debates with family and friends.

Beyond his family, Larry formed deep and meaningful bonds with his neighbors, Dave Stryker and Margaret Heurter. Dave was more than a friend—he was a brother in adventure, sharing countless memorable rides on their Harley-Davidsons. Margaret, with her kindness and constant support, ensured Larry was never alone, always looking after him in his times of need.

Larry was a man of depth—strong-willed, independent, and sometimes difficult to understand. Though not perfect, he left an undeniable impact on those fortunate enough to know him. His presence, humor, and storytelling were his way of connecting with others, filling his life with laughter, meaningful moments, and lasting memories. A complex and unique individual, his absence will be deeply felt.

The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hornell Humane Society (7941 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, NY 14843), honoring Larry’s lifelong love for animals.

The Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell, NY is honored to assist Larry’s family with the arrangements.
