Judith Ann “Judy” Griffith
HORNELL-Judith Ann “Judy” Griffith, 74, of Scott Street, passed away, after a short illness, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester on Friday morning (Sept. 6, 2019) one day before her 51st wedding anniversary.
Born in North Hornell on Sept. 4, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Warren and Alice (Ferrin) Stephens. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her brother, Larry Stephens.
A former resident of Angelica, Judy was a graduate of Angelica Central School, class of 1963 and a graduate of the former St. James Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Hornell, where she received her Registered Nurse certification.
Judy has resided in Hornell since 1963 and was employed for 42 years as an RN at St. James Mercy Hospital; she worked for 20 years in the Intensive Care Unit and was also involved with diabetes education and as a Lifeline coordinator, she retired in 2008.
For many years she was affiliated with the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association. Judy also served as a CPR instructor and as a volunteer for Faith In Action.
Judy loved fishing, her pets, baking apple pie, making potato salad, woodworking, Thanksgiving gatherings, Christmas with her family, writing down recipes, lunches with her former co-workers, traveling with her family, and being a nurse who cared for the elderly. She was never scared of hard work, whether it was chopping wood all winter for her parents’ furnace, or helping her son build a house while in her 60s.
Her loving family includes her husband of 51 years, Gerald K. “Jerry” Griffith who she married in Angelica on Sept. 7, 1968; two sons, Eric (Lindsay) Griffith of Ithaca and Paul (Jennifer) Griffith of Hornell; six grandchildren, John, Joshua, Kai, Kieren, Kendall and Paxton; one brother, Rod (Mary) Stephens of Canisteo; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

  1. I worked with Judy at St. James hospital for several years in the ICU. I learned so much from her and always enjoyed working with her. She was a great person with a great sense of humor. She will be missed by all who knew her. Rest easy Judy. Prayers to her family.

  2. Judy was a student in my math classes at Angelica, a nurse who coached me in diabetics care at St.James, and later, a fellow worker with me in Faith in Actions during which she drove thousands of miles taking persons to doctor’s appointments and in other areas of service to others. She will be sadly missed by many whom she helped. I will remember her as a good friend who gave great effort for the good of others.
