PULTENEY – Joyce Anna (Stenger) Matson of 13131 West Lake Rd., Pulteney, NY passed away suddenly on Monday, April 24, 2023.  Joyce was born April 8, 1932 to parents Margaret Merle King and August Martin Stenger.  Joyce graduated from St. Vincent de Paul Grammar School and Painted Post High School.  She earned her Nursing Diploma from Canisius College and Sisters of Charity Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo, NY.  She then was graduated from Alfred University and SUNY Binghamton.  She worked as a Nursing Supervisor for Steuben County Public Health Nursing and also was a Nurse Case Manager at Corning Hospital.  She was Associate Director of Professional Services for Olsten Kimberly Quality Care.  She was very proud to be inducted into the National Nurses Honor Society, Sigma Theta Tau, the only national professional honor society for nurses, in 1980.  Joyce worked in Nursing/Healthcare for more than 30 years and was very fond of her co-workers and extremely proud of being a Registered Nurse.

What Joyce loved most was being with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was happiest when they would come to visit and spend time with her at Keuka Lake.  Joyce loved sewing, knitting, reading and being with friends, family and her dog Oliver.

Along with her parents, Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Calvin (Cal) Matson in 2004, son, Robert in 1966, and brother Bill Stenger.  Surviving are her sons, Michael M. Matson of Annapolis, MD, and Stephen H. (Laura) Matson of Corning, NY; grandchildren: Andrew M. (Ginna) Matson of Louisville, KY, Amanda M. (Brandon) Pierson of Corning, NY, Calvin M. Matson of Germantown MD, Stone T. Matson and Nolan R. Matson of Denton MD; great grandchildren: Remedy R. Joyce was a true joy to be around, and an inspiration to many.  She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends who considered her a sister, mother and grandmother.

  3. My condolences to the family for such a sad loss.
The times I’ve spent with Joyce over the years have been so special. She’s always so kind and friendly to everyone she meets. Funny stories she would tell about her life experiences were so much fun to hear. Such a gift for story telling! She had such a sweet way about her. Always had time to speak to you if you bumped into her in the grocery store or post office. I will miss Joyce very much as I know so many will.
