For many years he was employed as the Highway Superintendent for the Town of Burns; he later retired from A.L. Blades & Sons in Hornell.
John was a member of the Arkport Memorial American Legion Post and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his grandchildren as well as refurbishing his 1950 Ford Pickup truck.
His family include his wife of nearly 52 years, Shirley; his two children, David Munson and Laurie Haynes both of Arkport; his two grandchildren, Courtney and Colt Haynes also both of Arkport; his sister, Mary Ann Chura of Hornell; his brother, James Munson of Arkport (formerly of Mills, Wyo.); his sister-in-law, Doreen (James) Doud of Canton, Ohio; also his five nieces and several cousins.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother-in-law, Robert Chura.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Gregory White, pastor of the Garwoods United Methodist Church officiating. Committal services and interment will follow at Heritage Hill Cemetery, Arkport. John will be taken to the cemetery in his 1950 Ford Pickup truck.

  1. I am sorry to read of your loss. Many have lost loved ones and want to see them again. The Bible actually says what will be death’s unavoidable eventuality at Revelation 21:4, which says, “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” Death will be gone forever. May this be of encouragement to the family of John Munson.
