Janet A. Sliter

ARKPORT-Heaven gained another angel when Janet A. Sliter, 85, formerly of Oak Hill Street, passed away Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 18, 2023) at the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Mt. Morris, NY.

Born in New Berlin, NY on July 24, 1937, she was one of six children born to the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Krom) Hendrickson. On June 18, 1960, she was married in Norwich, NY to Neil J. Sliter, who predeceased her on February 9, 2015 after nearly 55 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by one brother, Richard Hendrickson; and one sister, Jane Forrler.

A graduate of Sherburne High School in Sherburne, NY, Janet has resided in Arkport for about 55 years; for the past five years she was a resident of Updyke’s Willow Ridge in Hornell. Her family appreciates the wonderful care she received there from the staff, who became her friends and part of her extended family.

Janet was employed at Alfred University and before she retired, she was employed in the business office of Arkport Central School.

She was an active member of the Arkport Presbyterian Church where she served on various committees including the Stephen Ministry.

Janet enjoyed gardening, flowers and cooking. She was very creative especially when she was making crafts that she loved to share with family and friends. Janet will be remembered most of all for her “huge heart” and for her willingness to always help others, no matter what they needed. She had an amazing ability to always say or do the right thing. Even when she went shopping, she always remembered to buy something for someone else. She dearly loved her sisters (she was the eldest of five) who she helped care for when they were growing up; and she always looked forward to their annual “hen party” that she greatly enjoyed.

She is lovingly survived by her two children, Kimberly (Paul) Prewitt of Oxford, NY and Chris (Paula) Sliter of Arkport; seven grandchildren, Jess (Koji), Evan and Alec Prewitt, Brittany Sliter (Jess Peragine), Amber, Logan and Parker Sliter; one great-grandchild, Cedar; three sisters, Patricia Benane of Raleigh, NC, Barbara Hodge of Oxford, NY and Jean Hanna of Audubon, PA; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A service will take place in her memory at a later date.

Those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Arkport Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 6, 15 Main St., Arkport, NY 14807.

The Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell is honored to assist Janet’s family with the arrangements.
