IGNATIUS J. “NAY” MATTIE

NORTH HORNELL-Ignatius J. “Nay” Mattie, 93, entered into rest Sunday evening (April 29, 2018) at his home on Linwood Avenue.

Born in Hornell on Aug. 5, 1924, he was a son of the late Ignatius and Mary (Venuto) Mattie. In 1945 he was married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City to the former Madelyn Clifford, who predeceased him in 1980 after 35 years of marriage. Besides his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his three sisters, Mary Louise Mattie, Patricia Mattie, Veronica Casaceli; and his twin brothers, Rev. Richard Mattie and the Rev. David Mattie.

A life long resident of Hornell, Nay was a graduate of St. Ann’s School and Hornell High School. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1943 to his honorable discharge in 1945.

He began working with his father at the former Mattie’s Coca Cola Bottling Co. on Cass Street in Hornell; eventually he owned and operated Mattie’s Soda and Lunch on Main Street until 1972. He then became employed with the United States Postal Service at the Hornell Post Office until his retirement.

Nay was a communicant of St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell. He was also a member of the Fourth Degree of the Hornell Council, Knights of Columbus, the Carducci Lodge, Sons of Italy in Hornell and the Hornell Elks Lodge.

An avid fan of the New York Yankees and Notre Dame football, Nay also enjoyed bowling when he was younger. However, his greatest joy was his family and spending time with them. He will be remembered as a loving and generous person who always had a smile for everyone.

His loving family includes his seven children, Michael “Mickey” (Karen) Mattie of Fairport, Philip Mattie of Arkport, Regina (Steve) Moores of Hornell, Lynnda (Terry) Shugars of Albany, Richard (Barb) Mattie of Ypsilanti, Mich., David Mattie of Hornell and Stacia Schieder also of Hornell; his 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; his brother-in-law, Guy Casaceli of Avon; his long-time companion, Ruth Crittenden of Hornell; as well as his nieces, nephews and cousins.

Nay’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Patty Dailey for the loving care she gave him the past several months.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Ignatius J. “Nay” Mattie.

Calling hours are 4-7 p.m. Thursday (May 3, 2017) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where the Knights of Columbus will conduct a memorial service at 6:45 p.m. Thursday. Relatives and friends are invited to meet his family at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday (May 4, 2018). Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

The United States flag and the Navy flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in recognition of Nay’s military service.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to St. Ann’s Academy, P.O. Box 446, Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
