Hubert C. Wightman
ALMOND-Hubert C. Wightman, 87, died peacefully at home on Tuesday (Dec. 4, 2018).
He was born on Aug. 18, 1931 in Bath to Charles and Grace (Conine) Wightman.
The family moved to Almond in 1940, when Sand Hill Farm was purchased, and where Hugh and his father became partners in the farm business after Hugh’s graduation from college.
He graduated from Cornell University School of Agriculture in 1952. In 1953 he and Virginia Long were married in Niagara Falls, N.Y. On November 14, 2018 they celebrated 65 years of marriage.
He received a Master’s of Education degree from Alfred University. He joined the Allegany County Extension Service in 1961 working as a 4-H agent until 1966 when he became a charter member of the teaching staff at the newly organized Allegany County BOCES Vocational Center. Hugh later worked as the school’s administrator, retiring from that position in 1988.
He was a member of the Almond Union of Churches and served on the Alfred-Almond Board of Education and was also a member of the Allegany County Soil and Water Conservation District Board.
Hugh is survived by his wife; their two children, John H. Wightman and Bette Grace Henry; grandchildren, Jessica Barons (James), Mary Kathryn Day (Joshua), Adam Wightman, Daniel Henry, and Beth Brown; great-grandchildren, Jack and Vincent Barons, Mackenzie and Madison Day, Arianna and Alex Henry, Emaline and Addison Brown; his brother, Charles W. Wightman; and sister D. Adelle Wightman; as well as nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by baby daughter, Linda Ann; his parents and sister, Phyllis Mozgawa.
