Helen R. Black

BATH – Helen R. Black passed away Tuesday (July 12, 2022) at the Steuben Center in Bath New York at the age of 92.

Helen was born August 26, 1929, in Wheeling, West Virginia to the late James and Flora Walters.

Helen is survived by her son-in-law Thomas (Frankie) Dowdle of Murfreesboro, TN, grandsons, Matthew (Diana) Dowdle of Franklin, TN and Jason (Suzanne) Dowdle of Murfreesboro, TN, great grandchildren, Hayden, Jude, Samuel and Henry Dowdle, sisters Betty (Laurence) Kennedy of Bath, Kathy Duncan of Wayne and Lillian Storey of Hammondsport as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, husband Robert Black, daughter Gloria Dowdle, sisters Harriet Denham and Vera Young and brothers James Lee Walters, James L. Walters, Thomas J Walters and Joseph W. Walters.

Enjoying children, Helen chose to work in the cafeteria in the Hammondsport Central School System until retirement. She and husband, Bob then spent winters in Florida and summers in Hammondsport/Bath.  She enjoyed playing cards and bargain hunting with her sisters. Helen loved visiting her grandchildren and great grandchildren in Tennessee as well as spoiling their dogs with peanut butter on toast.

Family and friends may call Monday (July 18, 2022) from 5-7 p.m.at the Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home of Hammondsport, NY.

Funeral services will be at the Funeral Home Tuesday, July 19 at 11:00 am with internment immediately following at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammondsport, NY.

The Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home, 35 Main St., Hammondsport is honored to assist Helen’s family with the arrangements.

  1. Helen was a great friend , she was also great and key cafeteria worker , breakfast cook for many years. She was good to follow workers and make sure everything went smooth day after day after day and she love the kids. she also has GREAT SISTERS and family. GOD BLESS REST IN PEACE
