AVOCA – Gretchen Narby Hubbard, 85, passed away Sunday (May 3, 2026) at her home on County Route 70A.
Born in Clairton, PA on October 7, 1940, she was the daughter of the late William and Mantie (Bennett) Narby. A graduate of Haverling Central School, class of 1958, Gretchen was honored as the Court of Beauty winner, a title she held with pride. She served as a dedicated bookkeeper and partner at Hubbard Farms and later Hub-Boy Gravel working side by side with her husband, David. She served her community on the Avoca Town Board for a short time and devoted 20 years to the Grievance Assessment Board. She was a founding member of the Avoca Sports Booster Club, she was also active in St. Mary’s Board of Education during the years her children attended school. She also taught Catholic religious education in Avoca, while her children attended. Gretchen had a natural gift with children and was never happier than with a baby in her arms. She was a steady, caring presence for any child in need. Gretchen had a deep love for Irish music and cherished listening to it with her family, especially while cruising in her convertible. She had a special fondness for Daniel O’Donnell. Gretchen was also a collector at heart—of keepsakes, treasures, and memories—something anyone who knew her would surely smile about.
Gretchen was predeceased by her beloved husband of 57 years, David J. Hubbard, Sr. The two were married on November 28, 1959, and shared a lifelong partnership filled with love.
She is survived by her children: David Hubbard Jr.; Daniel (Karron) Hubbard; Suzanne (Jeff) Luckenbach; Stephanie (Bruce) Keesey; and Tim (Cindy) Hubbard; as well as many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart. She is also survived by her siblings: David Narby, Elizabeth Bowen, and Kathryn Narby; her sister-in-law, Terri Narby; and her brother-in-law, William Slayton.
Gretchen was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her siblings William Narby Jr. and Mary Alice Narby; her sisters-in-laws Nancy Slayton and Rosemary Clairemont; and her cherished grandson, Logan Manciocchi, whom she lovingly cared for.
At Gretchen’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. The family will hold a private celebration of life in her honor.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute in her memory are kindly asked to consider a donation to the Ronald McDonald House in honor of her beloved grandson.
Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home, Avoca, is honored to assist Gretchen’s family with the arrangements.
