GEORGE J. CULVER

PHOENIX, AZ-George J. Culver, 85, of Phoenix, Az., passed away Sunday (Nov. 22, 2009) at the John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital.
Born in Chemung, N.Y. on March 16, 1924, he was the son of the late Thomas and Sarah Culver.
A graduate of Waverly High School, George received his bachelor’s degree from Syracuse University, where he was also a member of the band. He received his master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II in the military police and was stationed in France. George was called back into service during the Korean conflict. While at Camp Polk, La. he served as a bugler.
For several years he was employed as a buyer for Sibley’s in Rochester before he began his employment with the Sakowitz Department Store in Phoenix, Az.
An accomplished musician, he received awards for his talent as a trumpet player.
His family includes his two sisters, Betty Arcangeli of Hornell and Eleanor Young of Brandon, Vt.; also several neices and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at a later date at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell. Interment will be in the family plot at the Hicks Cemetery, Hicks, N.Y.
