FLORENCE M. HAMMOND

BATH-Florence M. Hammond, 88, formerly of Avoca, died late Monday evening (Dec. 21, 2009) at the Taylor Health Center in Bath.
Born in Mt. Morris on Aug. 30, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Ward and Myrtle Kendall Wompole. In 1937 she was married Leo Hammond, who predeceased her in 2000, after 62 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, Fred and her sister, Margaret Randall.
Florence resided in Avoca until 1984 at which time she moved to Florida where she resided until 2000. She has resided in Bath since returning from Florida in 2000.
A housewife, Florence was also employed at Westinghouse in Bath.
She enjoyed flowers and cooking.
Her family includes her four children, Ed (Bonnie) Hammond of Kanona, Willard (Shirley) Hammond of Towelsville, Louise Brewer of South Carolina and Clair (Gail) Hammond of Avoca; 14 grandchildren in New York and South Carolina; 19 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Dawn Hall of Hammondsport; her brother, John Wompole of Kanona; also her nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in the spring at Greenville Cemetery, Avoca.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Kanona Fire Dept., PO Box 172 or to the Kanona Methodist Church, PO Box 174, Kanona, NY 14856.

  1. Sorry to hear of Florence’s passing. Lot’s of memories growing up as friends of Fred’s. Still hold him in our hearts, miss him.

  2. Florence was a very special friend. She and Leo were good friends of my parents also and they had many good times together. My sincere sympathy to all the family.
