Born in Watkins Glen on March 26, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Harry Lee and Harriett “Hattie” Emerson Barrett. She was married to William Henry Jacobs, who predeceased her in 1972. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son and daughter-in-law, William and Ann Jacobs, her two grandsons, David J. Following her career in retail sales she became employed in hostessing at the Hornell Country Club, the Coachlight and Ruperts.
An avid golfer, who had three holes in one, Elnora was a member of the Women’s League and the Twilight League at Twin Hickory Golf Club where she was fully dedicated to the beautification and maintenance of the grounds. She also liked to travel to play golf at different golf courses around the area with her golfing partners.
She was a loving mother and grandmother who was dedicated to her family and always enjoyed hosting family dinners for special occasions at her home. Elnora, who was always concerned about others, loved to bake and was known for her banana bread and apple pies that she lovingly shared with her family, friends and neighbors. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was very proud of their accomplishments. Elnora also cherished her dogs, especially Brandi, who was her constant companion, even when shopping.
She was also very proud of recently being baptized, confirmed and receiving Holy Communion in the Catholic faith and became a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Parish at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell.

Dear Dave and Mary Jo:
We are very sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. I only met your mom once, at my annual Blessed Angelo party a few years ago. She was a lovely lady whom I enjoyed meeting.
May she rest in peace. God bless her.
With Love
Being from the Persing family, I lived next door to Elnora my from the day I was born through college until I moved away. I will always remember the her as the sharp dresser full of life, wit and charm. She always had a quick joke for my father to chuckle at or just a friendly hello. Being a teenager, I knew it was summer when Elnora would be mowing the lawn at what I thought was the crack of dawn on Saturday morning, then she was off to play golf dressed to the nines. My brother Steve and my sister Jenni and our children visited Elnora about 2 years ago in her house and she was the same as I remember – still sharp and well kept, not missing a thing. I have many fond memories of the Mill St. neighborhood and Elnora and her family will always be a part them. I am truly sorry for your loss.
My condolences to Elnora’s family and close freinds. I knew Elnora when I worked in my first job at the Murray Stevens store. When I think of words to describe Elnora I think of caring, fun-loving, a real class act, and someone always to depend upon. I remember the pride and love she had for her family, and especially her grandchildren. Elnora was a truly special person to all that knew her well.
My family and I were both shocked and deeply saddened to learn Elnora had just recently passed away. It was just 2 short months ago that we chatted at my sister Sylvia’s reception at the K of C.
Elnora worked at Murray Stevens since I was a little boy and knowing and working with her for over 65 years
made her seem like my “second Mother”
She knew Murray back in the 1920’s and 30’s and remembered when the” Stevens twins” were born.
And of course the real success of Murray Stevens Store was due to the outstanding job Elnora did for over 45 years..many of the loyal customers only wanted Elnora to take care of
them.
I also remember her teaching me how to sweep the floors when I was in high school so Murray would not “fire me”.
Another fond memory was when her husband Bill would come into the store on Thursday evenings, always very nicely dressed and chat with all of the employees while Elnora waited on Doctors,Lawyers and Indian Chiefs!
Her enthusiasm, personality and athletic ability made her seem ageless
and I always assumed she would stay that way forever and we would always be able to visit with her on trips back to Hornell.
I know her family will miss her deeply.
Very Sincerely,
Bob,Sue and family
Elnora was like a dear aunt to me. I loved her dearly and visited her everytime I was back home. I can tell you that Murray Stevens store would not have run as effeciently and smoothly without her. She was hardworking and dedicated to my family and the store. She was a gentle, patient and kind woman with whom I had the utmost respect. I will miss her very much.
My first memory of Elnora when I was a little girl was her jewelry and leopard heels. I was fascinated by her long fingernails and she would tease me by tapping them on the counter. She always seemed to be on a mission at the store, chasing after my grandpa or my dad… to no avail. She would be the first person I would look for when I would visit and was curious to see what she would be wearing that day. She was alot of fun. Later in my life I would visit her at her home with my family. With Brandi attacking my feet and always leaving with a bag full of rhubarb. She was someone you thought would be around forever and I will miss her very much.
Nee-Nee will be forever in our hearts. As our grandma and great-grandma, she was always there to give us her love, support, caring….and yes, BANANNA BREAD! We were truly blessed to have her with us….to watch Brianna and Vanessa grow into the lovely young girls they are. Our girls always enjoyed our visits to Nee-Nee’s house to play with Brandi and her golf balls….to “serve Nee-Nee tea/lunch” as they played at being waitresses. But most of all to just sit and be with Nee-Nee. Although our hearts are sad to be without her here on earth, we know that she is at home and peace with our Lord in Heaven. God bless you Nee-Nee….We will always cherish our loving memories of you. Take care “Dolly”!
