PRATTSBURGH – David Elwyn Utter of Prattsburgh, NY, passed away on September 10th, 2026, due to health issues at the age of 71. David was born in Bath, NY, raised in Hammondsport, and graduated from Hammondsport Central School in 1972, after which point he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS William V. Pratt. He worked many years at both the Canandaigua & Bath V.A. Medical Centers, where he took pride in continuing to serve those who have served our country. He also worked in maintenance & grounds at Keuka College, where he enjoyed taking care of the ball fields and interacting with the students & faculty.
David was an AVID music enthusiast with an extensive classic rock album collection. He was a jack of all trades & hobbyist, always puttering or woodworking. He enjoyed playing cards and shooting a game of pool. He was a devout Yankees fan and also followed NASCAR. He loved his kitties, especially his little Peepot later in life, and was so devoted to family and so many friends over the years, both young and old.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years Barbara J (Roe Hawkins) Utter – Prattsburgh, son Michael J Hawkins – Prattsburgh, daughter Rebecca (Hawkins) Riekofski & her husband Steven – Ossipee, NH, granddaughter Cassidy L Papia & husband Captain James V. Papia – currently stationed at Fort Leavenworth, and Kaydence, whom he always considered his granddaughter.
He is predeceased by his parents E. Swartz & Ruth E. (Baker) Utter of Hammondsport, brother Roger W. Utter & his wife Barbara, sister Terry Turner & her husband Myron Turner, and infant sister Cheryl. He is survived by sister Donna U. Wright & her deceased husband (Pat) Roger I Wright, brother Gary R. Utter & his wife Sharon, brother Dale S. Utter & deceased wife Janice, sister Charleen Carlson & her deceased husband Tom Carlson, sister Cynthia Comfort, sister Kim Potter & her husband John Potter, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours will be held 6-8 pm Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home, Hammondsport, where a funeral will be held at 11 am Friday, September 18, 2026.
Interment will be at a later date at Bath National Cemetery, Bath, New York.
