BATH – Charles R. Skinner, Jr. slipped peacefully into eternal rest on July 26th, 2025, at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Charles was born in Port Chester, NY, to Inez and Charles R. Skinner, Sr. He married his high school sweetheart, Janetmarie Rizzuto, on November 28th, 1964. She survives.

While Charles built a career of over 40 years at Corning Glass Works, then Corning Incorporated, what was more important to him was over 50 years of volunteer fire service. He joined the Addison Volunteer Fire Department in 1974, where he served many roles, including President and Captain of Fire Police. He transferred to the Hammondsport Fire Department in 2000, continuing his service as fire police. Charles was also active in the Central New York Firefighter’s Association, having served as President and Assistant Chaplain, and he participated on several committees. Charles was active in the Church of the Redeemer in Addison, then later St. James in Hammondsport.

In addition to his wife, Charles leaves behind his daughter, Heather (William) Bair, son, Raymond (Renee) Skinner, sister, Patricia (Michael) Osgood, sister-in-law Bonnie Skinner, grandchildren Seth (Adriana) Buchanan, Chanowa (Grant Barnes) Skinner, and Andrew, Pip, Avery and Patrick Howard, great-grandchildren, Salem Skinner, and Raylynn and Castiel Buchanan, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert L. Skinner.

Philanthropy was very important to Charles, so in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Hammondsport Fire Department, 8521 SR 54, Hammondsport, NY 14840; the Addison Volunteer Fire Department, 1 Tuscarora St, Addison, NY 14801; your local food pantry, or another charity of your choice.

A funeral service with communion will be held at 11:00 AM SATURDAY, AUGUST 9th, 2025, at St. James Episcopal Church, Main St. and Lake St., Hammondsport, NY, with a fire processional, and a Celebration of Life with Fire Honors at The Hammondsport Fire Department at 12:30. Colorful attire is welcome.

The Bishop & DeSanto Funeral Home, 35 Main St., HAMMONDSPORT, is honored to assist Corky’s family with the arrangements.

Online condolences or remembrances of Charles are welcome below under ‘Share A Memory’, or on the Facebook page of Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home.

  1. Janetmarie, It is with real sadness when I learned of Charles passing. He was a true gentleman with a smile continually on his face. He was always interested in the betterment of the volunteer fire service. I am sorry that I can’t be with you and your family on Saturday, as one of our firefighters for Norwich is being buried that same day. But, I want you to know that you and your family are in my thoughts and payers. RIP, Charles we have it from here.

  2. The world has lost a good one. Charlie was part of our team at Corning/Decker Building. I so enjoyed working with him. Always a smile on his face, and never a job too small to not do his best. I feel like I know Janet, Raymond, and Heather, just from how often he spoke so fondly of you. His family and his fire department were his joys in life. Keeping you all in my prayers, and sending my condolences.

  3. I had the pleasure of being Charlie’s supervisor in the Materials Engineering / Defect Understanding Group at Corning Inc. for 5 or 6 years. He was a fast learner and always had a beaming smile on his face – unless I caught him napping in department meetings. That happened each and every time a meeting lasted longer than 20 minutes. LOL. Regardless, give Charlie a job to do and know it would be done to perfection. He was the best!

  4. Charlie will always be a part of central new york firefighters association. It was a pleasure and honor to work with him and Janet mare for the good of the volunteer fire service. We traveled many miles together over the years. Rest easy Charlie, we got it from here.
