CARL T. “SAM” MOSES
ALMOND-Carl T. “Sam” Moses, 85, passed away Friday evening (June 10, 2011) at his home on the Whitney Valley Road in Almond, after a short illness.
Born in Whitesville on March 29, 1926, he was the son of the late Carl and Eva Townsend Moses. On Sept. 11, 1945 he was married in Victoria, TX to the former Dorothy Jean Whitikar, who predeceased him on Oct. 7, 2002 after over 57 years of marriage.
A resident of Panama for several years, Carl has been a resident of Almond since 1954. He proudly served his country during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1944 to his honorable discharge as a Corporal in 1947. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal, the American Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal and he was a member of the Arkport Memorial American Legion Post.
Carl was employed as a mechanic for Alfred-Almond Central School and before his retirement he was employed at Alfred University as a Technical Specialist.
He was the co-founder of the Alfred-Almond Little League and built the dugouts at the Little League field. He was also influential in forming the church league basketball at Alfred- Almond Central School. Carl was a past, proud recipient of the Almond Lions Club Senior Citizen of the Year award,
He was a motorcycle enthusiast and sold BSA and Triumph motorcycles and spent time restoring and repairing many “bikes.” He was also an avid fan of Alfred University football and attended all 13 games and every practice in 2010.
A very talented and intelligent person, Carl will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his willingness to always help others in their time of need.
His family includes his two sons, Martin (Kathy) Moses of Almond and Roger (Donna) Moses of Holliston, MA; his five grandchildren, Christopher Moses of Denver, Colo, Timothy Moses and Kyle Moses both of Almond, Colleen (Steve) McIntyre of Cortland and Maxwell Moses of Holliston, MA; also his constant companion, Beuford.
Calling hours are from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Almond Union of Churches, 11 Main St., Almond, with Lee Ryan officiating. Committal services and interment, with military honors, will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bath National Cemetery.
The United States flag and the Army flag will proudly fly at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., an honored provider of Veterans Funeral Care, in recognition of Carl’s service with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to Alfred University Football, in care of Coach Dave Murray, Alfred University Athletic Dept. Alfred, N.Y. 14802. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
