BETTY JANE SCHWARZ

ARKPORT-Betty Jane Schwarz, 85, of Pine Knoll Mobile Home Park, passed away late Thursday evening (Oct. 2, 2008) at the Steuben County Health Care Facility in Bath.
Born in Canisteo on Dec. 12, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Reba Hornburg Stocum. On Aug. 26, 1942, she was married at the Presbyterian Manse in Canisteo to Edward G. Schwarz, who predeceased her on Feb. 3, 2000 after 58 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her infant daughter, Audette, Schwarz, her daughter, Sandra Jenkins; her sister, Frances Pratt and her brother, Robert Stocum.
A former resident of Canisteo, Betty graduated from Canisteo Central School with the class of 1940 and resided in Hornell before moving to Arkport in 1948.
She was employed in the pharmacy of the former Cards Drug Store in Hornell for 22 years before she began her employment as a pharmacy secretary at St. James Mercy Hospital in 1974, retiring in December 1982.
Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church in Canisteo and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Arkport American Legion Post.
She loved to sew for her family and friends including making Civil War outfits for re-enactors. She also enjoyed cooking and assisted at many dinners held at the Arkport American Legion Post.
Her family includes her two sons, Charles (Gail) Schwarz of Davenport, Fla. and Kevin (Polly) Schwarz of Rochester; her four grandchildren, Regena (Matthew) Garrepy, Natalee (Matthew) Davis, Audette (William) Bruce and Kaleigh Schwarz; her three great-grandchildren, Ethan Garrepy, William Bruce and Zackary Belzile; her two sisters, Carolyn Freidrich of Williamsburg, Va. and Nancy McMindes of Canisteo; her three brothers, Jack Stocum of Hornell, Roger (Shirley) Stocum of Tyrone and Donald (Ellie) Stocum of Williston, Fla. and Hammondsport; also her nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
To honor her wishes there will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held in Betty’s memory at 1:30 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Canisteo, with the Rev. James Patton officiating.
Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Canisteo.
In lieu of flowers, whose wishing may contribute in her memory to either the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049, the National Kidney Foundation of Upstate New York, 15 Prince St., Rochester, NY 14607 or to the First Baptist Church, 45 Greenwood St., Canisteo, NY 14823.
Arrangements are with the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell.

    Please know that I am sending lots of sympathy, prayers and most of all a huge chunck of my childhood’s most favorite memories. “Betty & Eddie Scharz”, “Uncle Charlie”, tupperware, her sewing skills and most of all her/their enduring freindship with my parents are a treasure of the heart.
    I always say that when someon new from Hornell is welcomed home….I hope that section of heaven is sound proof in respect for the neighbors….:-)
    Here is to her memory, canadian club 4 roses,and any recipe that could stretch a dollar and still taste gourmet!!!
