BERNARD L. “BERNIE” PETTIBONE

HORNELL-Bernard L. “Bernie” Pettibone, 73, of Hornell, passed away late Tuesday evening (May 17, 2011) at McAuley Manor in North Hornell.
Born in Buffalo on June 9, 1937, he was a son of the late Bernard and Hazel Neu Pettibone. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his sister, Alta Dennis, his sister-in-law, Audrey Pettibone and his nephew, Richard Allen Rosell.
A lifelong resident of Hornell, Bernie attended school in Hornell and was employed by Steuben Trust Company in Hornell. He was also very devoted to assisting the elderly of Hornell in a variety of different ways.
Bernie was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Hornell and enjoyed collecting coins and stamps.
His family includes his brother, Eugene Pettibone of Hornell; his sister, Carol (Herbert) Bayne of Hornell; his brother-in-law, William Dennis of Muncie, Ind.; his nieces and nephews, Deborah (Randy) Cravens of Muncie, Ind., James Dennis of Muncie, Ind., Gail (Timothy) Moore of Hornell, Martin Pettibone of Rochester, Ann (Mark) Domingos of Hornell; also several great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews as well as cousins and his best friend, Merle Newell of Hornell.
Calling hours are from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. A funeral service will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church in Hornell. Interment will be in Alfred Rural Cemetery.
Those wishing may contribute in his memory to their favorite charity.

  1. Dearest Carol, Herb and “Dutchy”.
    Condolences on the passing of cousin Bernie. You cared for him so lovingly which most assuredly meant so much to him. He felt your love.I last saw him years ago at the Texas Hot and he knew me right away. My sister Laverna had given me a treat of a Texas hot dog that I miss so much. Rochester doesn’t have one like that. Treasure all your memories, he is now with his mom. Love you all. cousin Norma

  2. Carol and family, I’m so sorry to hear of your loss of Bernie! He was such a Good Guy!! I always enjoyed him being in the same room when my Dad (Harry Jones) was his roommate. We lost our Dad this April, and I know what an empty feeling you get! They are in a better place now, may Bernie and Dad rest in Peace!

I can remember as a kid when he lived next door to us on Maple Street for a time. Always so kind and keeping that sidewalk clean for everyone. God has another angel up in heaven now…..Love,

  4. Carol and family, Please accept our condolences in the passing of “Bernie”!! I remember when he and My Dad ( Harry Jones) were roommates, Bernie was a true joy! We loved hearing him play his harmonica and his funny little laugh!! We lost our Dad in April, so we know what you are feeling. Please know that they are up there feeling Good and finally at REST!!!!
