BARBARA L. BOB O’NEIL
HORNELL-Barbara L. Bob O’Neil, of Hornell, passed peacefully on Tuesday (Feb. 21, 2012) surrounded by her four children at Highland Hospital in Rochester, where she received the highest quality of compassionate care.
Born in Hornell on Oct. 11, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Genevieve Stewart Lippincott. Barbara was a 1949 graduate of Hornell High School and a graduate of the Steuben-Allegany County BOCES Nursing program in Hornell.
She was employed as a licensed practical nurse at the former Bethesda Community Hospital in North Hornell and later was employed at the Bath Veterans Administration Medical Center. She returned to college and graduated from Alfred State College in 1978 then returned to nursing as a Registered Nurse.
Barbara was well respected in the nursing community as a compassionate and loving caregiver. She was often requested for private care by many who knew her compassionate manner and style of nursing.
Barbara was married to Joseph A. Bob on Sept. 2, 1948 and predeceased her on July 14, 1982 after nearly 34 years of marriage. She later married Richard O’Neil, who also predeceased her.
She is survived by her loving children, Alexandra and Donald Hockenberry, Stephanie and Peter Conway, Joseph and Susan (Lodato) Bob and Cynthia Blanchard and Gerald Miraglia all of Hornell; her grandchildren, Stephanie and Rick Gilbert of Freeport, Grand Bahama, Nicole Hockenberry of Hornell, Amy Hockenberry of Horseheads, Andrea Conway of Boston, Mass., and Christian J. Blanchard of Hornell; and her great-grandchildren, Aidan and Bronte. Also surviving are her loving nieces, whom she had a special bond with, Deborah Weller, Kathy Smith, Julie McLaughlin and their families; along with her cousins, Joyce Piedmonte and Joan Davis, who were like sisters to her; also her brother and sisters-in-law, Walter Bob, Helen Veroxie, Stancey Smith, Martha Painter, Ruth Just along with their families.
Besides her mother and husbands, she was also predeceased by her sister, Virginia Ordway.
Barbara will be remembered by her friends and family as a loving and caring mother. She will be remembered by her grandchildren for her spelling and math quizzes, when the winner would be rewarded with a special treat or allowed to “guess” how much change she had in her purse. She especially liked the holidays and was well known for her baking of pies, cakes and her signature cheesecake. She always would bake everyone’s favorite and usually sent everyone home with their own for later.
Barbara enjoyed her home and family and will be remembered for her loving and caring style; she never favored one more than another nor did she mince her words when she had something on her mind she felt needed to be said.
Calling hours are from 2-4 p.m. Friday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell where a service will be held in her memory following calling hours at 4 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Donald Maynard officiating.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to the Highland Hospital Medical ICU, 1000 South Ave., Rochester, N.Y. 14620 (envelopes will be available at the funeral home) or to a favorite charity of the donor’s choice.
