ARTHUR R. FOREMAN, JR.

HORNELL-Arthur R. Foreman, Jr., 86, of Hornell, passed away Wednesday evening (Nov. 10, 2010) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bath.
Born in Ft. Wayne, Ind. on June 17, 1924 he was a son of the late Arthur R. Foreman, Sr. and Viola Riopelle Foreman. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his life long companion, Elizabeth “Tinky” Foreman; his daughter, Ellen Webster; his two brothers, Donald and John Foreman and his sister, Kathryn Lawrence.
Art graduated in 1943 from Hornell High School where he was involved in several sports, excelling in basketball. Later he attended Canisus College in Buffalo on a basketball scholarship and received his bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Because of his skill and love of basketball, Art also served as a referee for many years and was inducted into the Hornell High School Sports Hall of Fame.
A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, Art served as a Chief Communications Officer with the Sixth Armored Division of the Third Army at the Battle of the Bulge, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland and was also a POW. As a result of his heroism he was the recipient of many awards and decorations including the Bronze Star and the POW medal.
While residing in Wellsville he was employed by the Worthington Corp. as a comptroller and upon his return to Hornell in 1963 he was the owner of the Credit Bureau of Hornell until his retirement in 1986.
Art truly loved Hornell and was a wonderful supporter of the people and area businesses. A member of Christ Episcopal Church in Hornell he also served on the Board of Directors of Steuben Trust Company for over 40 years. He was also involved in numerous other community organizations including, the Hornell Area Humane Society, the Hornell Area Family YMCA and the United Way.
His family includes his four children, Dr. Thomas (Mary Jo) Foreman of Hornell, Martha (William) Mostyn of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Carol Foreman of Hopewell Junction and Mary (Thomas) Dugo of Arkport; his nine grandchildren, Margaret Webster, Tom Foreman, Derek (Jenny) Foreman, Erin (Jared) Kurtz, Brittany Head, Richie Head, Lindsay Butler, Emily and Julia Foreman; several great-grandchildren; his special friend, Becky Saunders of Dansville; his sister-in-law, June Foreman of Angelica; also his many nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to meet his family at Christ Episcopal Church in Hornell where a Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday with the Very Rev. Thomas Gramley officiating. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will be at Rural Cemetery, Hornell.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 336, Hornell or to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Parkway, Hornell, N.Y. 14843.

  1. Thinking of all of you in your time of loss. Cherish the memories. I will always remember his greeting, “Hi, Turt Honey.” Your parents always made me feel like part of your family.Art will be missed by all who knew him. He is now at rest.
