David A. (Strickarz) Starz
HORNELL – David A. (Strickarz) Starz, 67, died peacefully Friday (Dec. 30, 2022) at his home on Pleasant Street.
Born in Perth Amboy, NJ on Oct. 11, 1955 he was a son of the late John and Helen (Pipik) Strickarz. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by one sister, Helen A. “Babe” Strickarz, one brother, Henry J. Strickarz; his wife, Ethel Lol-Strickarz and a brother-in-law, Raymon Loh.
A graduate of St. Joseph’s High School in Metuchen, NJ, and Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, Dave retired as a Building-Trades teacher at Steuben-Allegany GST BOCES in Hornell.
He was a member of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post, No. 440 in Hornell as a Sons of the American Legion and served as a Commander for many years. Dave was also a member of the AM Vets Post No. 243 in Hornell as a Son and was a past Commander and currently serving as the Treasurer.
A member of the Board of Directors of the Hornell Association, he was also a member of the Cpl. J.J. Mooney VFW Post No. 2250, the Hornell Elks Lodge No. 364, the Hornell Council No 243, Knights of Columbus, the Hornell Moose Lodge No. 210 and a member of the auxiliary of the Robert N. Austin Unit No. 1279 in Campbell, NY.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Marjorie Wilson-Starz; one son, Daemian (Kari Cappluzzi) Friedman; one granddaughter, Katie (Sean) Fitzpatrick; two great-grandsons, Bryce and Gavin Fitzpatrick; his in-laws, Eileen and Leon Fontier, Philip and Phyllis Wilson, Rosie Travis, Marietta and Jim Piersons, Bob and Karen Wilson, Nancy and Shawn Bedient; also several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; as well as countless friends.

There will be a celebration of Dave’s life from 1-5 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 8, 2023) at the Hornell American Legion, 72 Seneca St.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Arc of Allegany-Steuben, 1 Arc Way, Bath, NY 14810. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the Hornell American Legion.

This saddens me, I had just ran into Dave two weeks ago and had a really nice conversation with him. He was telling me about the many future plans he had. He was so looking forward to working on his properties. Not sure if this was sudden illness but David was was an awesome guy I have known for over 40 years, he will be missed.
Words cannot express the sadness my heart endures. We have known each other as colleagues and friends over forty years. We have shared laughter, joy, sorrow and heartaches as a family. You will be missed my friend more than you will ever know. May you Rest In Peace until we meet again.

Margie – so very sorry for your loss. It was a blessing to watch you and David in such happiness – even if it was too short a period of time.
Truly saddened of Dave’s passing. He was an amazing friend and colleague. Working with him was one of my greatest times of my career. He gave me the encouragement and trust to be creative with students. Dave was appreciated and loved by many students for his teaching techniques and believing in them.

I met David in Kindergarten and went to school with him through high school. Although we went different directions in life we managed to stay in touch at some level, which I am grateful for. Always funny, kind, generous and very smart, I feel fortunate he was part of my growing up experience. So glad he is reunited with the rest of his immediate family at the “Lucy Center” in heaven. Rest In Peace Brother.
Dave and l went way back. I was a few years older, but that didn’t matter. He was a college roommate añd we shared a ” rough and rowdy past”. For which we repented.
He was a rare guy : a straight shooter.
Honorable, compassionate and always had your back.
I went to St. Stephens grade school with David. He was a great guy. My condolences to his family.
I was a close friend of David’s in the mid 70’s in Buffalo, NY. He was a good friend and lovely person to know. I had a dream about him last night, and reached out today on messenger to see if he was doing well. I was shocked to see he had passed, and pray it was peaceful. Rest in Peace, my friend.
