DOUGLAS D. BURDICK

ALFRED STATION-Douglas D. Burdick, 74, of Pleasant Valley Road, Alfred Station, passed away unexpectedly Sunday afternoon (Sept. 15, 2013) at the Highland Park Healthcare Center in Wellsville, with his loving family by his side.
Born in Alfred Station on Aug. 3, 1939, he was a son of the late Arthur and Gretchen Clare Burdick. On June 2, 1970, he was married at St. Brendan’s Church in Almond to the former, Mary Jane Silsby, who survives.
A lifelong resident of Alfred Station, Doug was a graduate of Alfred Almond Central School and received an associate’s degree from Cornell University.
He was involved in farming his entire life and was also employed at one time at Alfred University and Crowley’s Dairy in Arkport; and before his retirement in 2006 he was employed as the Town of Alfred Highway Superintendent. Doug also served as the Town of Alfred Supervisor and was currently serving as an Allegany County Legislator.
A member of the Alfred Station Fire Co. for 56 years, he served as a past chief and in various other capacities; and for 55 years he was a member of the Almond Masonic Lodge.
Doug enjoyed hunting, meeting his friends for coffee, taking drives and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by two of his sisters, Norma Burdick and Joan Goff; and two brothers-in-law, Lyle Palmiter and Arthur Goff.
His loving family includes his wife of 43 years, Mary Jane; his eight children, John (Yvonne) Faughnan of Alfred Station, Lydia (Andy) Puleo of Wayland, Margery (Warren) Day of Baton Rouge, LA, Beth (Mark) Lay of Springville, Dawn Burdick of Dansville, Alan (Therese) Burdick of Lake Grove, William Burdick of Liege, Belgium, and Gretchen Burdick of Clifton Park; also a special family friend, Sherrie Reilly of Dansville; his 14 grandchildren, three great-granddaughters; his sister, Thelma Palmiter of Alfred Station; his brother, Charles (Jackie) Burdick of Alfred Station; also his many nieces and nephews; and last, but not least, his dog, Teddy.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday and noon-1 p.m. Saturday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral and committal service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Sean DiMaria officiating. Interment will be in Alfred Rural Cemetery, Alfred Station.
