MARY M. CORNELL
HORNELL-Mary M. Cornell, 85, of the Hungry Hollow Rd., Town of Fremont, passed away early Sunday morning (Dec. 12, 2010) at Hornell Gardens
Born in Hornell on Jan. 4, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Donald and Marguerite Brown Moran. On Jan. 24, 1946, she was married in Hornell to Kenneth N. Cornell, who predeceased her in 1977 after 31 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her infant son, Gary Cornell; her two sisters, Kathryn Coston and Ann Kennedy and her brother, John Moran.
A life long resident of the Hornell area, Mary was a graduate of Hornell High School and after graduating she was employed by the former Erie Railroad in Hornell as a junior clerk. Later, besides being a homemaker, she also assisted her husband in the operation of Ken Cornell Bulldozer & Backhoe Service as a bookkeeper.
Mary was an avid lottery player and also enjoyed playing cards, hooking rugs and watching football on television, especially the Buffalo Bills. A self taught organ player, she also loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Her family includes her five children, Patricia (Nick) Tennant of Manassas, Va., Margaret “Peg” Cornell of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., Kenneth “Neil” Cornell of Hornell, Thomas (Amy) Cornell of Hammondsport and Nathan (Kay) Cornell of Hornell; her seven grandchildren, Kathleen Tennant, Diana Egan, Kelly Egan, Collin Cornell, Arlen Cornell, Andrea (Chris) Muhleisen and Michael Cornell; her three great-grandchildren, Jaxson, Kenneth and Natalee Muhleisen; her sister, Joanne Moran of Tacoma, Wash.; also her nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Hornell Gardens for the compassionate care that they gave to Mary.

Dearest Cornell Family – we lost my Mom, Mary’s sister in 2007, so I know the heartache you feel losing your dear Mother. She was a sweet kind person, whom I remember from my childhood. She always had a ready smile and a quick joke – her memory with be with me forever. Know that she was loved and take comfort that she is with Anne, Jack, Kathryn, Donald, and Margaret – maybe selling popcorn balls to the angels!
I remember visiting with Aunt Mary and all the lovely chaos, noise and good will that existed in what we called the “holler” at the time. I was somewhat overwhelmed. I think Mary has left a magnificent legacy in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I am sure she looks down on it all and chuckles. I hope she and my Mom are getting re-acquainted and giving each other comb outs and back rubs.
Kathryn, Mary’s sister and my mother, loved her sisters dearly. Looking at Mary’s photo here, I am reminded of how much the 4 Moran girls resembled each other. I have an adorable photograph in my home that shows Kathryn and Mary as tiny little girls taking a bath together in an old metal basin. It’s sometimes hard to imagine a mother as a sister, an aunt as a baby girl, but Mary was that and much more in her long life, and was loved in many ways. I send my heartfelt to condlences to my cousins and their children, and to our aunt Joanne. May Mary rest in peace.
Dear Sister Mary, You are with me always. You are my last sister, leaving me the last one. I enjoyed all our phone calls, letters, and visits. My heart will take a long time to mend. I love you so much and I will miss you till the day I die to join you. I bought some lottery tickets yesteday, in your honor, hoping
I picked your “lucky numbers”. I know
you loved me, we were very close growing up on 59 Glenn Avenue. You were
very thoughtful in waiting the next day to say “good bye” so you would not
die on my birthday on the 11th Dec. The three hour difference in time made it on the 12th. Did you figure that one out too? I hope you are at peace
and have united with MOM and Dad. I am sorry I could not make it to your service, but I was there in spirit and sorrow. Thank you for being my sister
for so many years. Love, Sister Joanne
Dear “Murkie” as we all used to call you. I can picture to this day the way you used to sleep most of the day and then put life into high gear as the evening turned into night time. Mario Lonzo – are you kidding me? Always “complaining” about picking up after the boys, the never ending shuffle of clothes to the washer and dryer, and yet still getting early morning coffee and 3 country square meals prepared per day. You were a magician but one who always made time to sit down and talk about anything on our minds. Yes, Mary, you made a lasting impression on me during those few years in the early 70’s and I thank you for allowing me to spend them with you. May the angels above gently rock you to sleep as you are now able to catch up on your rest. May God love you and protect you forever.
