Virginia Carrig Pieklo

Hornell – Virginia Carrig Pieklo, of Myrtle Avenue, passed away peacefully Wednesday (July 14, 2021) at her home with her family.

A native and life-long resident of Hornell, she was born June 24, 1922 and was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Kelly) Carrig.

Virginia was a graduate of St. Ann’s School, and later graduated from Hornell High School, one of the youngest graduating students. Following high school, Virginia was employed for many years by the New York Telephone Company as an operator and later as a supervisor. She also worked for the former Erie Lackawanna Railroad and Conrail as a clerk in the Trainmasters’ Office, and later retiring from that position. During that time, she married Thomas J. Pieklo on June 11, 1947 and went on to have seven children. Virginia continued to be a working mother, who always challenged her children to be their best in both their careers and their faith.

Virginia was a faithful communicant of St. Ann’s Church and continued as a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Parish. With a family, career, and active church life, Virginia was a member of the St. James Auxiliary, Ladies of Columbus, St. Ann’s Mothers Club, Hornell Ladies BPO, and the Hornell High School Alumni Association.

Virginia and her husband had the opportunity to travel to Europe and visit historic sites and participate in several pilgrimages. When she was home, Virginia was always ready to celebrate get-togethers after mass, and family dinners for almost every major holiday. She was ready to celebrate those important living moments we all have in life.

Besides her parents and her husband, Virginia was also predeceased by her two brothers Joseph and Francis Carrig; her sisters Mary Rose Carrig and Anna Marie Carrig Damrath; and her sister-in-law Jane Carrig.

Virginia is survived by her brother Raymond (Margaret) Carrig of Canisteo, NY; all seven of her children; Dr Thomas Pieklo (Dr. Ellen), Gerald (June) Pieklo, John Pieklo, Raymond (Mary) Pieklo, Martin (Mary) Pieklo all of Hornell, Rosemarie Crisafulli (Dr. Joseph) of Albany, NY; and Maureen Halle (David) of Boston, MA.

In addition to her children, Virginia is survived by grandchildren including: Sara, Kelly (Christopher) Madden, Meghan, Dr. Mary Stenson (Dr. Matt), Capt. Matt Pieklo (Brittany), Joseph Crisafulli (Katie); Dr. Maura Crisafulli, TaraMarie Crisafulli, Casey Halle, Thomas Pieklo, Martin Pieklo, and Marirose Pieklo.

She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren: Joseph, Caroline, Claire, Mia, Kellen, Lucas, Grayson, Isabelle, Colten, Rohan, and many nieces and nephews, including Patricia Carrig of Shortsville, NY and Dr. Barbara Moehring of Sandy Hook, CT.

There will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to join her family at St. Ann’s Church, 31 Erie Ave., Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday (July 20, 2021). Private interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Town of Fremont.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to St. Ann’s Academy, P.O. Box 446, Hornell, NY 14843 to continue supporting Catholic education.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell is honored to assist Virginia’s family with the arrangements.
