Susan M. “Susie” McDaniels
HORNELL-Susan M. “Susie” McDaniels, 70, of Armory Place, passed away late Friday evening (April 23, 2021) at Elderwood, Hornell, after a long courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
Born in Hornell on January 14, 1951, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Jean (Puller) Hurlburt.
A lifelong resident of Hornell, Susie attended Hornell High School and completed a secretarial course at Steuben-Allegheny BOCES in Hornell. In 2001, she began her employment with the Hornell City School District as a Teacher’s Aide, and eventually completed her certification to become a Teacher’s Assistant. She retired in 2009 due to her illness.
Susie was diagnosed eleven years ago with Alzheimer’s. She fought her illness just as she’d always lived, with bravery and spunk, and with her daughter, Shelly, was an advocate in the fight against Alzheimer’s. They were active in fundraising and participated together in an Alzheimer’s Walk in Geneseo, NY. The love and support they received from family and friends was deeply appreciated. For the past seven years, she has resided at Elderwood in Hornell, where she brightened the days of those around her with her colorful tie-dyed tops and sparkling jewelry.
Susie will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She was the “glue” that bonded her little family together. Susie was always helping others, no matter what they needed. She loved all types of animals, birds, and jewelry, especially all of her “little gems.” A fabulous cook and an avid bingo fan, she also enjoyed dancing, travelling, cruises, gambling, trips to the Casinos, long rides in the car, and stock car racing.
Her loving family includes her husband of 51 years, Robert McDaniels, who she married at the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell on October 4, 1969; two children, Robert (Christine) McDaniels of Canisteo, NY, and Shelly McDaniels of Hornell; three grandsons, Jayson Morey, and Xavier and Garrett McDaniels; one great-grandson, Colson Morey; six siblings, Linda Hosmer, David (Esther) Hurlburt, Kathleen (Martin) Eddy, Steven Hurlburt, Christine Rowe and Debra (Rodney) Finney; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
There will be no calling hours or funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to either the Alzheimer’s Association, 435 E. Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY 14620, or to the Hornell Area Humane Society, 7649 Industrial Park Road, Hornell, NY 14843, both causes near to her heart.
The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell is honored to assist Susan’s family with the arrangements.
Online condolences and remembrances of Susie are welcomed on the Facebook page of Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc.
