Shirley Emma Meyer
HORNELL – On Thursday morning, December 12, 2024, Shirley Emma Meyer fell asleep in death with her husband by her side. Shirley was born on November 12, 1937 in the village of Wellsville, NY to Wilbert and Iva Schultz. She had a true love of nature and enjoyed spending time growing up with her family. She also enjoyed participating in many sports and excelled at baseball.
Shirley’s greatest love was of her God Jehovah and after studying with Jehovah’s Witnesses, she was baptized at the age of 14 on September 21,1952. She took her faith very seriously and spent her life engaging in many hours as a volunteer minister sharing Bible truths learned from her in-depth study of the Bible. In fact, she spent several years with an average of over 70 hours each month volunteering her time in order to share with others the same hope she had for the near future. Shirley was not afraid to talk to anyone about the Bible and would share her faith at every opportunity. Her most cherished accomplishment though, was teaching her five children to have that same love for God and zeal for sharing their beliefs with others.
She also had a deep love for planting flowers and spent many hours cultivating her beautiful garden. She would never wear gloves but said she had to “Get her hands dirty. That’s the only way to do it.” One of her favorite hobbies was putting together puzzles and she loved sharing them with others when she was finished, so they could have that same joy too. She was a night owl and enjoyed reading, so she would stay up late because she just had to finish her book. She especially had a love for the Bible and didn’t go a day without reading from it. She loved her small poodle, Mocha, and was known for taking her everywhere, including when she visited her husband at the nursing home and shopping at the grocery store.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Wilbert Schultz, Sr. and Iva Schultz, her brother, Wilbert Schultz, Jr., her sisters, Betty Converse, Wilda Harris, and Beverly Smutzer and her daughter-in-law Penny Meyer. She is survived by her husband, George Meyer of Hornell, NY, her brother, Albert (Candace) Schultz of Canisteo, NY, her 5 children, David (Connie) Meyer of Conway, SC, Daniel (Lori) Meyer of Rochester, NY, Darryl (Ramona) Meyer of Tucson, AZ, Tamara (Randy) Mattison of Canisteo, NY, and Lori Gleason of Hornell, NY. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces that she loved dearly.
A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1162 Airport Rd., Hornell, NY 14843 on Saturday, January 18, 2024 at 3:00 pm. There will also be a zoom option available.
