Mary R. Smalt
WAYLAND-Mary R. Smalt, 90, passed away Friday evening (June 17, 2022) at her home on Derevees Road.
Born in Hornell on Oct. 26, 1931, she was the daughter of the late John and Evelyn (Stuart) Rees. On Feb. 19, 1955 she was married at St. Ann’s Church in Hornell to Harry E. Smalt, who predeceased her on Sept. 11, 2014, after 59 years of marriage. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, Timothy Smalt in 1998, her brother, John Rees in 1999 and his wife, Mary Joan Rees in 2017.
A graduate of St. Ann’s School and Hornell High School, Mary received her RN from St. James School of Nursing in Hornell. She and her husband, Harry resided in Hornell for about four years before moving to the Village of Wayland; she has resided for nearly 62 years at her home on Derevees Road.
She began her career as a registered nurse at St. James Mercy Hospital and spent a short period of time at the former Wayland Hospital before returning to St. James where she was employed for more than 30 years serving in several different capacities before retiring from Mercycare.
Throughout the years Mary was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Hornell, a member of the Hornell High School Alumni Association and enjoyed spending time, knitting, doing crossword puzzles and bowling. After retiring she volunteered as a driver for Meals-On-Wheels.
She is lovingly survived by her seven children, Susan Smalt of Wayland, Ellen (David) Harris of North Carolina, Teresa “Terri” Bailey of Corning, Michael Smalt of Wayland, Elizabeth “Betsy” Krider (Raymond MacDougal) of Wingate, NC, Nancy (Joseph) MacDougal of Anderson, SC, and Eric (Bobbi) Smalt of Wayland; 11 grandchildren, Christopher Smalt (Alix Shupp), Erika Popple(Rob Hart), Jessica (Michael) Lyne, Shawn Bailey, Mikela (Jesse) Sorenson, Danielle (Kenny) Foote, Brittany (Casey) Frye, Alicia MacDougal, Zachary MacDougal, Samantha Smalt and Nathan Smalt; also 14 great-grandchildren; as well as her nephew, John Rees and niece, Mary Ann Rees.
To honor her wishes, a private viewing and funeral service will be held at the convenience of her family at the ST. GEORGE-FORSYTHE FUNERAL HOME, 109 W. Naples St., Wayland. Committal prayers and interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Wayland.
