JAMES A. “U.J.” LaVERDE

HORNELL-James A. “U.J.” LaVerde, 41, passed away very unexpectedly early Wednesday morning (Jan. 6, 2010) at his home at 114 East Main St.
Born in Hornell on Nov. 16, 1968 he was the son of Ronald LaVerde, Sr. and Rose Sheridan LaVerde. On Oct. 5, 2002, he was married at the United Methodist Church in Hornell to the former Julie Fox.
A life long resident of Hornell, Jim was a graduate of Hornell High School and had been employed at Kraft Foods in Avon, Simmons-Rockwell in Hornell and was currently employed at Lowe’s in Hornell.
He was a life time fan of the Dallas Cowboys, NASCAR (especially Jimmy Johnson) and playing World of War Craft on the computer.
Always smiling and cracking jokes or playing pranks on someone, he loved the outdoors and often took charge of the grill. He will be remembered most of all for the love he had for his family and for being the best husband and father anyone could ever have.
His family includes his wife of seven years, Julie; his two daughters, Ashley Rose LaVerde of Canisteo and Alyssa Renee LaVerde of Hornell; his grandson, who was named after him, James Caleb; his mother, Rose M. Sheridan of Hornell; his father and stepmother, Ronald Sr. and JoAnn LaVerde of Hornell; his two sisters, Teresa “Terry” LaVerde and N. Lynn LaVerde both of Hornell; his two brothers, Shawn (Bobbie Jo) LaVerde and Ronald Jr. (Tresa) LaVerde all of Hornell; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bruce and Christine Fox of Avoca; also his many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and his best friend, Don Flint of Hornell.
Calling hours are from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell where a funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating. Private committal services for his family and interment will be held at Rural Cemetery, Hornell.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to either the American Heart Assoc. PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3029 or to Regional Cancer Care, 21 Orchard St., Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.

  1. Julie, we are so deeply sorry to hear about Jim’s passing. He was a great guy and will be sorely miss. You are in your thoughts and prayers.

  2. Julie…you are in my thoughts and prayers constantly. Jim was always that funloving sort of guy that always made me laugh. That will be very missed. I especially know how much Mike enjoyed his company. Thanks for including us as your neighbors in your always enjoyable gettogethers. We are blessed to have known Jim and yourself. Please stay strong and know you always have friends in Mike and I.

  3. What a wonderful person that was taken from us way too early. Jimmy was always smiling and could make the worse day seem not so bad. I remember going to Hornell football games with Jimmy. Especially the one that we got lost in Rochester going to. I will miss him very much. My prayers and thoughts are with his family.

  5. My dear cousin. I’m so grateful for your last visit to florida for us to see you and lynn. I’m so sorry for your family and friends for this loss. But your on your way HOME now. I pray for all that who were close to you to recover from this tragedy. My memories of you are nothing but laughter, fun times, lots of outside playing when we were little and just how so excited you were to see us on your florida visit. God Bless you and your family.   6. I will always remember Jimmy for his sense of humor and very caring spirit. He loved his wife, daughters and family. I have many fond memories of hanging out with Jimmy, Julie and also his family. Those of us who have known him have lost such a wonderful, caring and accepting friend. You will be forever missed and never forgotten… RIP my dear friend..
