Herbert Donlad Bayne

HORNELL – Herbert Donald Bayne, 91, passed away early Wednesday morning (Nov. 6, 2024) at his home on State Route 21, with his devoted wife by his side.

Born in Hornell on Feb. 8, 1933 he was a son of the late Fredrick and Dora (Polmanteer) Bayne.  Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by three sisters, June McDaniels, Margaret Bayne and Barbara Brownell; and one brother, Fred Bayne.

A resident of Hornell for most of his life, Herb was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1952 and received an associate’s degree in electrical technology from Alfred State College.

He proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy from 1951 to his honorable discharge in 1955 and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Ribbon.

Herb was employed by the former SKF Industries in Hornell and was also self-employed as an electrical contractor; before retiring he was employed by the former Phillips Lighting in Bath, NY

A member of Christ Episcopal Church in Hornell, he was also a life member of the Arthur H. Cunningham American Legion Post No. 440 in Hornell, a former member and third vice president of the Canisteo American Legion and a member of the Audubon Society.

Herb enjoyed bowling and was an avid golfer and a member of the Hornell Golf Club.

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 50 years, Carol L. (Pettibone) Bayne; as well as several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

There will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to join his family at Christ Episcopal Church, 6 Center St., Hornell where a funeral service will take place at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 12, 2024) with the Rev. Shanna Hawks officiating. Committal prayers and interment, with military honors, will follow at Alfred Rural Cemetery, Alfred Station.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute to either Christ Episcopal Church, 6 Center St., Hornell, NY 14843 or to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), 860 Dolwick Drive, Erlanger, KY 41018 or www.dva.org. Envelopes will be available at the church.

The Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell is honored to assist Herb’s family with the arrangements.

  1. Carol …. I’m so very sad to hear of Herb’s passing. When I think of the two of you … I always smile remembering the friendship the two of you shared with my parents. So many great memories.
