Helene Margaret Yergens
HORNELL-Helene Margaret Yergens, 88, passed away peacefully Friday evening (May 28, 2021) at her home on Pine Street, where she has resided the past 62 years.
Born in Hornell on November 15, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Ambrose Mitchell, who passed away in 1956 and Marian (Doane) Mitchell who passed away in 1990. On May 10, 1952 she was married in Hornell to Kendrick “Ken” L. Yergens, who predecease her on April 18, 1998 after46 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by two sons, Thomas in 1952 and William “Billy” Yergens in 2011.
A resident of Hornell for most of her life, Helene was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1950 and was a longtime resident of Pine Street.
She will be remembered most of all as a devoted “stay-at-home Mom,” but was also employed for about 20 years as a teacher’s aide with the Hornell City School District before she retired.
For many years she was a communicant of the former St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hornell and later became a communicant of St. Ann’s Church of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Hornell.
Helene was an avid bingo player and also enjoyed trips to the Casinos especially with her family and her late friend and gambling companion, Doris Kelleher. She also loved music and was a big fan of Bob Seger.
Her loving family includes her three children, Kathy Moses of Almond, Tim Yergens (Lauren Link) and Mike Yergens (Lisa Dye), both of Hornell; six grandchildren, Chris Moses, Tim Moses, Kyle Moses, Colleen McIntyre (Danny Dobson), Andrea (Joe) Meyer and Marisa (Justin) Stillman; four great-grandchildren, Cale McIntyre, Aaron Moses, Harper Stillman and Conrad Meyer; also several cousins; as well as her close friends, Judy Coleman, Kathy Cregan and Ruth Ann Testani
Calling hours are 4-6 p.m. Tuesday (June 1, 2021) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. Friends are invited to join her family at St. Ann’s Church, 31 Eire Ave., Hornell where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday (June 2, 2021). Private interment will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Hornell.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org). Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
