Gerald K. “Jerry” Griffith

HORNELL – Gerald K. “Jerry” Griffith, 86 of Scott Street passed away Monday morning (July 1, 2024) at St. James Hospital in Hornell.

Born in Hornell on May 20, 1938, he was a son of the late John and Louise (Sawyer) Griffith. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Judith Ann “Judy” (Stephens) Griffith who he married in Angelica, NY on Sept. 7, 1968

A former resident of Canisteo, NY, Jerry was a graduate of Canisteo Central School, class of 1957 and received an associate’s degree from Morrisville State College in 1959. From 1961 to his honorable discharge in 1965 he proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force.

In 1968 Jerry began his 32 year career as a Firefighter for the Hornell City Fire Department, retiring in 2000. He was also employed parttime at the former St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell.

He enjoyed photography, reading and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is lovingly survived by two sons, Eric (Lindsay) Griffith of Ithaca, NY and Paul (Jennifer) Griffith of Hornell; six grandchildren, John, Joshua, Kai, Kiernan, Kendall and Paxton; one brother, David (Darlene) Griffith of Collinsville, VA; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be an hour of calling from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday (July 16, 2024) at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home, 285 Main St., Hornell where a Time of Remembrance will follow at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The United States flag and the Air Force flag will proudly fly at the Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home in recognition of Jerry’s military service.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in his memory to the Hornell City Fire Department, 110 Broadway, Hornell, NY 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.

The Bishop-Johnson & DeSanto Funeral Home is honored to assist Jerry’s family with the arrangements.
