Richard Lee “Dick” Smith, Sr.
ARKPORT-Richard Lee “Dick” Smith, Sr., 83 of Briggs Road, Town of Fremont, passed away early Wednesday morning (March 16, 2022) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Born in the Town of Fremont on Jan. 13, 1939, he was a son of the late James and Mary (Hagadorn) Smith. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by four brothers, Robert, Clifford, James and Frank Smith; and three sisters, Bessie Jackson, Esther Wise and Nora Marie Hosmer.
A lifelong resident of the Arkport/Fremont area, Dick was a graduate of Arkport Central School, class of 1957 and proudly served his country with the U.S. Army from 1962 to his honorable discharge in 1965, including on year of reserve duty.
Before he retired, Dick was employed for nearly 38 years as a carpenter for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Union, Local No. 85 of Rochester, NY.
An avid motorcyclist, he was a member and past president of the Hornell Motorcycle Club. Dick was also a lifetime member and past chief of the Fremont Volunteer Fire Dept., a member of the Arkport Historical Society and a 30 plus year member of the Arkport Memorial American Legion Post. He especially enjoyed collecting, tinkering and deer hunting with family and friends
His surviving family includes his wife of 52 years, Pamela Rae (Rawleigh) Smith, who he married in Fremont in 1969; three sons, Richard Lee, Jr (Erin) Smith of Dansville, NY, Ronald Lee (Cherie) Smith and Sean David (Shannon) Smith all of Fremont; eight grandchildren, Caelan, Kameryn, Guilianna, Jakob, Zachariah, Conor, Carson and Avry; one sister, Maryann Mulhollen of Canisteo, NY; three sisters-in-law, Esther Hosmer Smith of Almond, Kathie Pfaff of Hornell and Carol Rawleigh of Georgia; as well as his nieces, nephews and cousins.
To honor his wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A “Celebration of Life” will take place at the family home, 8020 Briggs Road, Arkport (Town of Fremont) beginning at 1:30 p.m. Saturday , June 18th.
