Susan R. (Quackenbush) Ray

HORNELL-Susan R (Quackenbush) Ray, also affectionately known as “Susie Q”, entered into rest, in the presence of her loving family, late Tuesday evening (Sept. 11, 2018) at the age of 69 at her home on Scott Street, after a long illness with Alzheimer’s.

Born in Hornell on Nov. 29, 1948 she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Eleanor (Saylor) Quackenbush. She was married to Benjamin O. “Gentle Ben” Ray at their home on June 3, 1988, he predeceased her on March 21, 2011, after 23 years of marriage.

A lifelong resident of Hornell, Sue was a graduate of Hornell High School, class of 1967 and received her Licensed Practical Nurse Certification from Steuben-Allegany BOCES in Hornell.

She was employed as an LPN at Sonyea and the Witter House in Dansville before she began her employment as a secretary with the former Morrison-Knudsen and eventually retired from Alstom. After her retirement, she dedicated her time doing private duty nursing.

Sue was a member of the Hornell Association, the Hornell Moose Lodge No. 210 and the VFW Auxiliary in Hornell.

An avid Buffalo Bills fan, she also enjoyed NASCAR and trips to the Casinos. Sue will be remembered most of all for being a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and sister, who especially enjoyed spending time with her grandkids.

Her loving family includes her three children, Pamela (Tom) Davis of North Dakota, Billie Jo Klees of Hornell and Joseph Klees (Genevieve Day) also of Hornell; her two stepchildren, Michael (Debbie) Ray of Canisteo and James (Lisa) Ray of Hornell; her nine grandchildren, Nathan and Rachel Davis, Tyler Mattison, Mason Terwilliger, Rylan Mattison, Sage, Elliott, Vivian and Zaiden Klees; her great grandchild, Braelyn Mattison; also several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; her three brothers, Patrick (Ann) Quackenbush and George Quackenbush (Karen Flaitz) all of Hornell and Edward Quackenbush (Monica Morris) of Nunda; her three sisters, Mary Bossard of Arkport, Frances Martin of Peoria, Ariz., and Ellie (Tom) Morey of Arkport; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc. in Hornell is honored to serve the family of Susan R. (Quackenbush) Ray.

Calling hours are 6-8 p.m. Monday (Sept. 17, 2018) at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home, Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where a funeral service will be held in her memory following the calling hours at 8 p.m. Monday, with Deacon Robert McCormick officiating.

Everyone is invited to a Celebration of Life for Sue on Saturday (Sept. 22, 2018) at the Main Place in Hornell from noon-3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers those wishing may contribute in her memory to Steuben County Ministry, in care of Turning Point, 20 Elm St., Hornell, N.Y. 14843. Envelopes for memorial contributions will be available at the funeral home.
